Job Summary:

The position exists to provide campus security to ensure all individuals' safety, security, and well-being within the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Campus security aims to ensure all individuals' safety, security, and well-being within the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The individuals include students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the campus property.

This role requires specialized training and continuous education. All items listed below will be part of an in-depth training process that will build as the employee gets more experience. Each item will have training and standard operating procedures to ensure that the employee is equipped to meet the duties and requirements of the role.

This position operates the following equipment but is not limited to:

  • Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
  • Computer Software and Computerized network video recordings and live cameras
  • General office equipment includes facsimile, copy, and telephones
  • AED and First Aid Kits
  • Motorized vehicle
  • Bicycle.
  • De-escalation tools such as OC spray and handcuffs

Key Responsibilities:

The position is a fully operational Security I-III position with leader responsibilities. The purpose of this position is to help ensure the readiness, timeliness, correctness, and soundness of the Security Officers I-III work product.

The security officer roles require specialized training and continuous education. The Tech IV role will serve as the lead for all security officer employees in the department (Tech I, II, III). They will collaborate with the department head (supervisor) to ensure the team is equipped to meet the duties and requirements of the role. This position will provide input around work standards and employee performance. They will also monitor staffing level and deploy staff according to campus need and staffing levels, this process will be done in partnership with the department head.

The position's responsibilities will include:

  • Patrolling the exterior and interior jurisdiction of the campus by way of a vehicle, bicycle, and on foot.
  • Physical Security: Inspect and secure physical barriers, gates, fences, and locks. Ensure that security measures are in place and functioning correctly.
  • Providing assistance and escorts to faculty, staff, and students after dark.
  • Emergency Response: Act swiftly and appropriately in emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, or security breaches. Know how to operate fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers. Coordinate with local authorities and emergency services as needed.
  • Conflict resolution.
  • Enforcing parking violations and writing citations.
  • Assisting with traffic control.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports for non-criminal incidents, property crimes, and non-injury accidents.
  • Utilizing security systems for safety and crime awareness and deterrent.
  • Manage crowds and ensure order during events or gatherings. Use crowd control techniques and equipment to maintain safety.
  • Conduct risk assessments such as fire hazards, physical environment, and crime opportunities.
  • Administer basic first aid when needed. Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies.
  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed about relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices. Ensure compliance with security-related legal requirements.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience in a security officer position or similar position.

Substitution:

Appropriate education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year

Colorado law requires that candidates for state government jobs be residents of Colorado at the time of application.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience as a security officer in higher education.
  • CU Systems experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and concisely with others.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic first aid, CPR, and hazardous materials and chemical weapons knowledge.
  • Basic computer and MS Office proficiency.
  • Ability to monitor surroundings and recognize irregularities.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills and ability to respond quickly and appropriately under pressure.
  • Ability to understand and enforce laws, policies, protocols, and procedures, Professionalism, leadership skills, and organizational integrity.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Colorado law requires that candidates for state government jobs be residents of Colorado at the time of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license at the time of hire and must not have acquired no more than twelve (12) points in the last (5) years.
  • Must be able to speak and comprehend English fluently.
  • A Person in this position must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking/standing for extended periods of time, walking up and down stairs of multiple story buildings, and assisting in subduing physically combative persons.
  • The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus requires security coverage 24/7. There are several requirements that are applicable to this position:

o For overtime eligible positions (FLSA non-exempt): This position has been designated as essential personnel. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regularly assigned shifts during emergency campus closure.

o Employees in this position will be required to work either a straight or rotating shift and may be required to work weekends and holidays.

o Regular shifts are subject to change depending on business needs and any changes to your regular shift will be communicated in advance by your supervisor.

o Employees in this position will be required to "stay over late" or "come in early" to "cover" shifts as needed.

o Must be willing and able to provide off-hour phone contact information to be accessible during non-work hours in case of emergencies or to cover unscheduled staffing shortages.

o This position may be eligible for shift differential pay depending on the hours worked and in alignment with State of Colorado standards.

  • Must be willing and able to pass a Police Department Background Check which may include: Personnel History Questionnaire, Integrity Interview, Polygraph Examination, Finger Print Check, Drug Screen, Credit/Civil Check, Criminal History and Driving Infractions Check, Reference Checks, and Post-Conditional Offer Pre-Placement Physical and Psychological Examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $4,671- $5,792 per month.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
