Job Title : Senior Data Scientist (NLP / Machine Learning) Location: Jackson, MS, Remote Rate : Best competitive rate
Position Overview
The Client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Data Scientist to lead a proof-of-concept initiative focused on enhancing the child welfare intake process using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and advanced machine learning techniques.
This role is critical in demonstrating how modern data science approaches can improve decision-making, optimize resource allocation, and ultimately enhance outcomes for at-risk children.
Key Responsibilities
1. Development Framework & Planning
Establish a structured framework for executing the proof-of-concept, including milestones, deliverables, and timelines
Identify key risks and develop mitigation strategies
Define task breakdowns and ensure alignment with project goals
2. Current State Analysis
Collaborate with stakeholders to understand existing intake workflows and decision-making processes
Analyze current system limitations and identify areas for improvement
Prioritize enhancements based on impact to child outcomes and operational efficiency
3. Solution Design & Innovation
Lead the design of a modernized intake process leveraging NLP and machine learning algorithms
Define system architecture and functional components
Evaluate trade-offs across different technical approaches, data sources, and computational models
Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with project objectives
4. Design Review & Governance
Establish and lead formal design review processes
Evaluate solutions based on effectiveness, technical feasibility, risk, and data integrity
Ensure transparency through comprehensive documentation
5. Proof-of-Concept Implementation
Oversee development and testing of the prototype solution
Conduct regular status updates and provide technical leadership
Proactively resolve technical and operational challenges
6. Demonstration & Stakeholder Engagement
Support a multi-day demonstration showcasing the prototype's impact
Communicate findings clearly to stakeholders
Capture feedback and refine the solution accordingly
7. Roadmap Development
Contribute to a strategic roadmap for scaling and integrating the solution into the State's technology ecosystem
8. Agile Collaboration
Participate in Agile development processes to ensure timely and high-quality delivery
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field
Extensive experience in data science, machine learning, and statistical modeling
Strong expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP)
Proven experience working with large-scale data processing systems (e.g., handling hundreds of millions of records efficiently)
Experience with child welfare data systems (e.g., CCWIS) and predictive modeling for social outcomes
Demonstrated ability to design and implement end-to-end machine learning solutions
Required Experience & Expertise
Experience working on U.S. Federal or Government data science programs (TS/SCI exposure strongly preferred)
Ability to evaluate algorithmic trade-offs (accuracy, scalability, computational efficiency)
Experience building non-rule-based decision systems using probabilistic or stochastic inputs
Proven ability to translate human decision-making processes into computational models
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing machine learning models from the ground up
Background in geospatial analytics, social network analysis, or pattern-of-life modeling
Strong understanding of data engineering and pipeline optimization
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
