General Summary:

We're looking for a Senior Data Scientist passionate about using AI, ML, and LLMs to transform how organizations understand and optimize their workforce. This highly visible role sits at the intersection of advanced AI, scalable data engineering, and people analytics, partnering with senior HR and business leaders to deliver production‑grade solutions.

You'll architect intelligent systems-not just models-translate complex workforce data into actionable insights and help shape our AI roadmap. If you thrive in ambiguity, own end‑to‑end solutions, and want to influence talent strategy, organizational design, and employee experience, we'd love to talk.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field required; advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant analytical or data science experience.

  • Demonstrated depth in multiple core data science disciplines (e.g., ML/statistics, data engineering, automation).

  • Advanced SQL and data modeling experience across complex data environments.

  • Proven ability to independently manage multiple initiatives and provide direction to others.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience working in regulated or complex operational environments preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership capability and a track record of delivering high-impact analytical solutions.

Technical Specifications

  • Hands-on experience with modern AI approaches (LLMs, embeddings, RAG, etc.)

Vector databases (e.g., FAISS, Chroma) and RAG architectures

  • GitHub (including GitHub Copilot)

  • Web app frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Dash, FastAPI) for building analytics products

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of advanced statistical, machine learning, and AI solutions that support strategic and operational decision-making.

  • Apply domain and business expertise to translate complex problems into well-defined analytical approaches and scalable solutions.

  • Design and oversee end-to-end data science workflows, including data extraction, validation, modeling, deployment, and performance monitoring.

  • Integrate data from multiple internal and external sources to produce modeling-ready datasets and reusable data assets.

  • Build predictive and prescriptive models to explain outcomes, forecast behavior, and identify risk or opportunity.

  • Play a lead role in embedding analytics and AI solutions into existing business processes through automation and system integration.

  • Partner with data engineering, IT, and business teams to ensure solutions meet architectural, security, and quality standards.

  • Provide technical leadership across data science initiatives, ensuring consistency with agreed-upon methodologies and quality attributes.

  • Communicate analytical results and implications clearly to leaders, enabling informed decision-making.

  • Coach and mentor less experienced data scientists; provide guidance on prioritization, approach, and technical execution.

  • Ensure adherence to responsible AI standards, including privacy, bias mitigation, and ethical use of employee data.

  • Maintain awareness of emerging analytics and AI techniques and evaluate applicability to enterprise use cases.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$89,400.00-$183,500.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
