Position Description:

This role is critical in driving the successful delivery of a dynamic R&D portfolio by leading and managing the Partnership Management team, ensuring productive and effective partnerships with Global Development’s external suppliers. These partnerships will cover a range of services, including but not limited to clinical trial execution, lab services, home health, digital health and flexible staffing services (biometrics and trial management). The Senior Director, Partnership Management will be a key member of the Global Development Business Operations and Partnerships leadership team and serve as a key connector between internal stakeholders and their relevant external counterparts at the supplier/partner for 1 or more categories. The incumbent will champion their external partners and be a representative and spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson. This Senior Director will report to the VP, GD Business Operations and Partnerships and will work closely with members of Partnership Infrastructure and Partnership Accountability, as well as key functional and business leaders to enable an effective and impactful partnership management organization.

This position is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the overall partnership management team, influencing broader GD and R&D leaders, driving innovation, and ensuring adherence to all regulatory and company standards. This position is also accountable for executing fit-for-purpose governance and oversight to the relationship and performance of the suppliers/partners in scope. Their leadership will also ensure their Partnership Management organization follows clear principles and strategy, goals and objectives, works with an enterprise mindset, optimizes existing relationships and constructs, develops and proactively pursues new relationship(s) to meet the portfolio needs in close partnership with the involved functions.  Stakeholders include, but are not limited to GD, Finance, R&D Procurement, R&D Quality, and other J&J Innovative Medicine leadership to meet the short-and long-term deliverables defined by the business, maximizing value of our supplier alliances and ensuring delivery of the development portfolio. 

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·         Leading Partnership Management: Be an effective people leader for a diverse and globally distributed team, providing oversight, coaching, mentorship, steer and consistent ways of working.  Develop and drive an organizational structure that enables optimization of category allocation, remits and accountabilities across the collective Partnership Management team.  Proactively manage and grow partnerships impact to effectively deliver business objectives, including management of budget and headcount, with a focus on quality and adherence to Health Authority and legal regulations. Ensure governance structures are in place and contribute to global governance, driving consistency across the portfolio. Oversee the execution of partnership strategies, address and resolve issues, ensuring suppliers meet contractual obligations. Represent Partnership Management to executive leadership to ensure transparency and effectiveness.

·         Critical Strategic Focus: Work with an enterprise mindset, balancing internal and external inputs and insights to drive effective and impactful strategy.Develop and maintain a strong understanding of business partner needs, identify opportunities and strategic focus areas in conjunction with business partners across J&J IM.  In partnership with procurement, finance, and business partners, establish and implement a supplier strategy in alignment with overall business needs including the activities listed below, providing effective leadership while also engaging more tactically as necessary to effectively support the team and stakeholders.

  • Provide direct matrix leadership for governance and relationships with the executive leadership or C-suite of suppliers

  • Oversee the Partnership Management Directors and teams execution and anticipation of resource needs for a given set of capabilities across patterns/suppliers

  • Oversee projects related to implementation, maintenance, and optimization of the One Delivery Model

  • Oversee execution of geographic optimization strategy in collaboration with GD stakeholders and providers.

  • Oversee optimization, productivity and value creation opportunities for GD and R&D generated through the Partnership Management accountabilities.

·         Innovation and Continuous improvements: Drive the team to ensure appropriate assessment and validation new partnerships, highlighting the innovation capabilities they bring. Oversee the implementation of new suppliers. Drive a culture of continuous improvement within Partnership Management and develop networks to foster growth. Successfully embrace new ways of working.

·         Documentation, Issue Management & compliance:

  • From the Partnership Infrastructure developed standards & playbooks, oversee adaptation to individual suppliers and ensure adherence

  • Address and resolve issues, ensuring suppliers meet contractual obligations

·         Collaboration: Ability to work with agile mindset in lean team with capacity to build strong strategies and relationships between internal stakeholders and external counterparts. Develop and drive functional expertise to anticipate future needs. Oversee and support the implementation of new suppliers and establish supplier strategies.

·         Travel: Up to 10% domestic and potential international travel.

Minimum Qualification:

  • BA/BSc or equivalent required; MBA or other Scientific Master’s degree preferred

  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience required

  •   In depth understanding of drug development in the Pharmaceutical industry

  • Must have demonstrated leadership success.

  • Strategic mindset with ability to guide development of a coherent and compelling strategy

  • Independent thinker with ability to bring new ideas up for consideration

  • Evaluates and looks for new ideas from outside of JnJ

  • Experience in managing external stakeholders/ strategic partnership and/or alliance management is required. 

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders and influence decision-making across a matrix organization is required.  

  • Knowledge of supplier processes and contracting is preferred in either in a deliverables‐based model or functional‐service provider model.  

  • Sound business and financial acumen is an asset.

  • Manages the development and continuous improvement of Partnership Management capabilities

  • Makes an impact as a coach of direct reports to help them improve their skills and abilities

  • Strong facilitation skills to run effective meetings that result in clear decisions and assigned next steps

  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications: PowerPoint, Word and Excel
