Job Description

As part of the commitment of state government to make Massachusetts a national leader in artificial intelligence innovation, the Massachusetts AI Hub has been established at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech). The Massachusetts AI Hub drives cutting-edge collaboration between government, industry, startups, and academia, pursuing solutions to the world’s most critical challenges, and unlocks economic opportunities for businesses and residents across the state.

The MA AI Hub strives to make AI technology more accessible to small and large enterprises in the state’s key sectors, enable researchers, entrepreneurs, and startups to pursue the development and commercialization of innovative new ideas.

The Massachusetts AI Hub seeks a strategic leader to drive resource orchestration for the organization. This position drives real-world adoption of the AI Hub’s key resources, including the Massachusetts Data Commons Collaborative and a new GPU cluster housed at the Mass Green High Performance Compute Center. The goal is to accelerate the state’s transition from AI capability to implementation by managing high-impact use cases that support economic growth and societal impact.

The Senior Director will need to advance existing and establish new relationships with research, priority industry sectors, state and federal agencies and the academic and nonprofit organizations that will engage with the MA AI Hub’s data and compute resources. Additionally, the Senior Director will explore other grant funding and revenue opportunities as part of AI Hub’s financial model. This may include federal and state funds, industry, membership models, philanthropy, and other revenue-generating services to ensure the organization's long-term sustainability and impact.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with the AI Hub Director and MassTech leadership to oversee Hub projects, guaranteeing access to computing resources and data for initiatives delivering commercial or societal impact, while maintaining responsible AI practices. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Presiding over the development, governance and use of the Massachusetts Data Commons and instituting secure, ethical data management protocols.
  • Designing and administering the strategic framework for compute allocation, ensuring optimal utilization rates and equitable access to critical Commonwealth initiatives.
  • Identifying and prioritizing high-impact AI challenges from regional industry and academic partners.
  • Converting business objectives into technical Hub projects, with an emphasis on sectors such as life sciences, healthcare, robotics, climate tech, advanced manufacturing and fintech.
  • Building partnerships with CEOs and CTOs to encourage collaboration; monitoring performance metrics and serving as a public representative for the MA AI Hub.
  • Ability to manage and grow a team as required to support MA AI Hub programs and initiatives

This is a unique chance to shape the Commonwealth's AI future, transforming one of the nation's most robust computing and data infrastructures into a powerful engine driving solutions to the world's most pressing challenges.

Requirements

  • 12–15+ years in venture capital, tech leadership, R&D management, or strategic development
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-institution technology initiatives.
  • Experience evaluating emerging technologies, scaling innovation programs, or guiding strategic tech investment.
  • Proven track record working at the intersection of innovation, commercialization, and technology deployment.
  • Experience with multi-stakeholder governance and technical infrastructure
  • Proven ability to coordinate across industry, academia, and government to align priorities and decision making.
  • Experience participating in or leading data governance bodies, advisory boards, or cross functional steering groups.
  • Strong knowledge of high-performance computing, data cross-functionals, and the AI startup ecosystem
  • Awareness of trends, challenges, and commercialization pathways within the Massachusetts and national AI startup communities.
  • Preferred background in mission-driven, non-profit, or collaborative settings
  • Experience working in public-private partnerships, research initiatives, or multi-institutional collaborations.
  • Comfort navigating funding models that include government grants, industry partnership, etc.
  • Travel within the state is required (often not accessible by public transportation); occasional travel out of state is anticipated.

This position requires candidates to be able to work at our Westborough or Boston Massachusetts office at least two days per week. This is not a fully remote position.

The salary range for this position is $135,000 - $150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s background, skills, and internal equity.

Attend offsite and inter‑office meetings as required, including travel between Boston and Westborough office locations. Some work locations and meeting sites may not be accessible by public transportation.

In addition, MassTech provides a competitive and comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Generous health and dental insurance coverage
