Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Production Engineering (PE)-Battery Manufacturing Engineering (BME) Battery Cell Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Senior Engineer to join our Ryohin Joken (Conditions for Good Process and Product) advancement and problem-solving group.

Reporting to Engineering Manager, the person in this role will support the PE-BME Battery Cell Department's mission to deliver engineering solutions for rapid competitiveness improvements through safety first, people development, and customer focus.

The primary responsibility of this role is leading planning and problem-solving efforts in pre-production trial activity.  Utilizing and improving systems and procedures for efficient and effective issue identification, root cause analysis, issue resolution, and reoccurrence prevention / kaizen to subsequent activity and projects.

This role will also contribute to the success of developing organization’s capabilities through advancement and application of Ryohin Joken knowledge and skill.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leader of cross-functional team collaborating with equipment

  • Engage and resolve material, product, and process issues both internal and external

  • Create and implement working/trial plan for confirmation and problem-solving activity using Toyota Business Practice methods (TBP) or equivalent Lean practices

  • Create detail technical and summary reports for organizational learning and development

  • Input to process and equipment plan/specification for kaizen and issue reoccurrence prevention

  • Use and advancement of systems and procedure for problem solving and learning capture

  • Individual activity management, status visualization/reporting, and incremental reflection

  • Lead internal and external partner relationships aligning to team objectives, development, and support

  • Activity related to PE-BME Department-level Hoshin/ overall direction for organizational advancement

  • Individual support for standardization and kaizen (continuous improvement) of Department systems and processes

  • Mentor and Teach other members in the team on battery knowledge, trial planning and execution, data analysis and Toyota principles if applicable

  • Drive own individual development, seek feedback, and monitor progress

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or similar technical field or 7+ years of equivalent Engineering role experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience in manufacturing production preparation role and schedule/deliverable management including stages of project plan, process/equipment plan, specification and procurement, installation and trial

  • Experience in battery cell product, processes/equipment, and/or trial activity

  • Experience coordinating with varied functions in large corporate organization, including production engineering, manufacturing, research and development, and Quality, or similar, and reporting out to senior leadership level

  • Experience in interpreting and applying product/process specification, drawing and data, etc. including introduction of new materials and change point management and confirmation

  • Ability for weekend and shutdown work, overtime up to 25%, and travel (domestic and international) up to 15%

Added bonus if you have

  • Experience in application of Toyota Production System

  • Experience in product x process/equipment simultaneous engineering for new model

  • Documented problem-solving certification or activity such as Toyota Business Practice (TBP), Fault Tree Analysis, or similar

  • Experience in manufacturing plant production operations role

  • Experience in data analytics tools and methods

  • Experience in digital engineering software tools and procedures, including the ability to read, interpret and modify model data

  • Japanese language proficiency including verbal and written
