Senior Engineer I, Software Engineering

As part of ASM's Software Engineering team, you'll develop advanced control software that powers some of the world's most sophisticated semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Your work will directly support robotics, gas delivery systems, temperature control hardware, and factory automation, delivering real-time solutions that drive chip production. Based in Phoenix, you'll collaborate with global engineering teams and play a key role in shaping the future of semiconductor automation and equipment connectivity.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop applications for Windows and real-time operating systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues within real-time control systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve software, electrical, and mechanical system issues.
  • Lead technical escalation efforts with field engineers and global customers.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance and Support teams to investigate issues and improve regression test coverage.
  • Author and review software requirements, system specifications, design documents, and test plans.
  • Investigate internal and customer-reported issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Evaluate and recommend software engineering tools, processes, and best practices.
  • Participate in system architecture, design, and scheduling initiatives.
  • Integrate and support factory automation interfaces, including SECS/GEM and related industry protocols.
  • Collaborate with automation teams to ensure reliable communication between manufacturing equipment and factory systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Strong software development experience using C#.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development, preferably in a full-stack or systems-focused environment.
  • Semiconductor industry experience.
  • Hands-on experience with factory automation systems.
  • Familiarity with SECS/GEM, GEM300, and EDA (Interface A) protocols.
  • Experience working with Automated Material Handling Systems (AMHS).
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

What Sets You Apart

  • 10+ years of software development experience, including software architecture and system design.
  • Experience developing machine control software, preferably for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows and real-time operating systems.
  • Experience building multi-threaded and real-time applications.
  • Hands-on experience with GUI development and device drivers.
  • Knowledge of networking, industrial communications, and EtherCAT.
  • Understanding of dynamic scheduling algorithms and deadlock avoidance techniques.
  • Ability to analyze complex system interactions and drive long-term technical improvements.
