Sr. Manager, Engineering - Storage

Fastly's Storage team builds and maintains the core data platforms for Fastly's Compute and Delivery Platforms, including products like KV Store, Object Storage, Secret Store, and global real-time data pipelines. This manager role will lead a team focused on providing customers with lightning-fast access to their data and critical observability tools. You will nurture a highly talented team, driving technical direction, and building collaborative roadmaps to meet the scalability challenges of sustained company growth. While you won't be hands-on in the code base, this role will require you to leverage a strong technical background in related distributed systems.

What You'll Do:

• Manage, mentor, and support a thriving, collaborative, distributed engineering team
• Ensure collaborative cross-functional roadmap planning and maintain close partnerships across engineering, product, and other stakeholders
• Drive technical direction, providing context to technical conversations that lead to clear goals and prioritization
• Create just enough process to enable effective cross-functional planning, communication, and risk mitigation
• Recruit and hire software engineers, and provide regular feedback and career development opportunities to the team
• Clearly communicate upward and outward to set and adjust expectations for roadmaps and deliverables

What We're Looking For:

• 10+ years of domain relevant software engineering experience - i.e. backend & large scale distributed systems with expertise in modern programming languages and tooling.
• 2+ years leading distributed systems engineering teams & managing engineers at all career levels
• Experience building and operating large-scale distributed platforms
• Strong product and business orientation, with the ability to connect technical investments to business outcomes
• Experience fostering inclusive, collaborative, and high-accountability engineering cultures
• Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills

We'll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

• Having built or run large-scale storage systems and real-time logging pipelines
• A deep understanding of distributed databases and the trade-offs involved
• Building developer tooling, including ergonomic SDK design that integrates cleanly into developer workflows
• Experience with network protocols and caching concepts
• Exposure to WebAssembly

Work Hours:

• This position will require you to be available during core business hours and occasional nights and weekends as needed to support team members in other time zones and as the escalation point for on-call incidents.

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.

There is a strong preference for Hybrid near a local office. However, we may be willing to consider exceptionally qualified remote candidates within the US.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary:

The estimated salary range for this position is $228,280 to $273,936.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly's equity and discretionary bonus programs.
