Job Description
Position Summary
Thompson Engineering is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with 10+ years of experience and an active Professional Engineer (PE) license to lead and grow our geotechnical engineering services. This role is ideal for a highly experienced engineer who combines strong technical expertise with project management, client leadership, and mentoring capabilities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering complex geotechnical investigations, analyses, and designs while supporting business development and guiding junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage geotechnical engineering projects from proposal through completion
- Plan and oversee subsurface investigations, including field exploration and laboratory testing programs
- Perform and review geotechnical analyses and design for:
- Foundations (shallow and deep)
- Earth retaining structures
- Slopes and embankments
- Pavements and earthwork
- Prepare, review, and seal geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations
- Provide technical oversight and quality control for geotechnical deliverables
- Serve as a technical advisor to clients, project managers, and design teams
- Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and client meetings
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, civil, and construction services
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (Master's preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
- 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical principles, design methods, and industry standards
- Experience managing multiple projects and budgets simultaneously
- Proven ability to produce high-quality technical reports and recommendations
- Excellent communication, leadership, and client-facing skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering
- Experience working on transportation, commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with regional soil conditions and local/state regulatory requirements
- Experience supporting or leading business development initiatives
