Job Description

Senior Investment Accountant / Investment Analyst

Location: Charlotte, NC or Hartford, CT

The Senior Investment Accountant / Investment Analyst will support the accounting, reporting, analysis, and performance monitoring of the Company's multi-billion-dollar investment portfolio in accordance with U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles. This role combines investment accounting execution with portfolio analytics, attribution analysis, and management reporting to support accurate financial reporting and informed investment decision-making.

The position partners closely with Investment Operations, Treasury, Financial Reporting, Actuarial, Risk Management, Tax, and external investment managers to ensure timely and accurate reporting of investment activity. The role also supports regulatory reporting, implementation of new accounting standards, internal controls, and process improvement initiatives.

Key ResponsibilitiesInvestment Accounting & Financial Reporting

Prepare and review journal entries related to investment activity, investment income, realized gains and losses, impairments, and fair value adjustments.Perform accounting for a diversified insurance investment portfolio under U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles.Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes related to investment accounting and reporting.Prepare quarterly and annual U.S. statutory investment schedules, including Schedules B, BA, D, and E, statutory disclosures, general interrogatories, and supplemental filings.Support quarterly and annual GAAP financial statement disclosures, including fixed income investment and derivative-related disclosures.Ensure compliance with NAIC Statutory Accounting Principles and applicable regulatory reporting requirements.

Portfolio Analysis & Management Reporting

Support quarterly and annual portfolio attribution analysis and explain key drivers of investment performance.Monitor portfolio activity and identify significant fluctuations, trends, and investment risks.Analyze investment transactions and balances, including purchases, sales, income, amortization, impairments, unrealized gains and losses, and other investment-related activity.Assist in the preparation of investment committee, management, and board-level reporting packages.

Reconciliations, Controls & Audit Support

Reconcile investment activity between custodial records, investment accounting systems, and the general ledger.Support accounting and reporting for derivative instruments, including validation of valuations, balances, reconciliations, and statutory disclosures.Prepare supporting documentation and respond to requests from internal and external auditors.Support internal controls over investment accounting, reporting, reconciliations, and regulatory filings.

Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Support

Identify and implement process improvements, enhance controls, and contribute to system and reporting enhancements.Participate in cross-functional initiatives and special projects supporting the broader financial reporting and investment accounting function.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.5-8 years of progressive experience in investment accounting, insurance accounting, investment operations, or investment analytics.Minimum of 3 years of investment accounting experience within a life insurance company or insurance asset management environment.Experience with U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles.Experience accounting for and reporting derivative instruments, including valuation review, reconciliations, and disclosure support.Advanced Excel skills with strong analytical capability.Proven ability to manage deadlines in a quarterly close and audit environment.Strong communication skills with experience interacting directly with auditors and external parties.Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to operate effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

CPA designation preferred.Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing U.S. statutory investment schedules, disclosures, and regulatory filings, including Schedules B, BA, D, and E.Experience with Clearwater Analytics and Oracle.Exposure to portfolio attribution, performance measurement, investment strategy, or asset-liability management concepts.Experience preparing executive or board-level investment reporting.Demonstrated ability to leverage data analytics and automation tools to enhance reporting and operational efficiency.Strong understanding of investment securities, financial markets, portfolio analytics, and investment performance concepts.Experience analyzing fixed income, structured products, private investments, alternatives, and derivative instruments.
