Job Description

Summary

Senior Protection & Controls Engineers play a leading role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of NYPA's transmission and generation systems. As technical authorities in protective relaying, system disturbance analysis, and NERC/NPCC compliance, they oversee advanced engineering work, provide professional guidance, review and approve design packages, and mentor developing staff. Their leadership directly supports NYPA's grid modernization, asset management, and reliability strategies.

Senior P&C Engineers may contribute to flagship NYPA initiatives - such as transmission corridor rebuilds, high‑voltage substation modernization, renewable project protection studies, and statewide grid resiliency enhancements - all vital to delivering clean, dependable energy for New Yorkers.

This posting allows NYPA to accept applications year‑round and match candidates to opportunities as they become available. Candidates are placed based on technical competencies, experience level, and interest areas. Due to the high degree of technical and regulatory responsibility, a New York State PE license is required.

At NYPA, your work truly matters - every project you touch has a direct impact on people's lives, from strengthening the grid to advancing the clean energy transition. You'll join an amazing team of people who know their craft, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to high impact infrastructure that keeps New York running safely and efficiently. We design our benefits and work practices to support your life beyond the workplace, so you can thrive personally and professionally. Whether you are early in your career or building deep technical expertise, NYPA provides experience, opportunity, and growth through exposure to unique engineering challenges, mentorship, and pathways to broaden your skills over time.
