Shop Foreman-Lead Mechanic

Job Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise daily shop operations, assign work, and prioritize repairs based on equipment needs.
• Lead, train, and support mechanics and shop personnel.
• Perform and oversee preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Repair or replace engines, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical, brake, fuel, and related systems.
• Plan maintenance schedules, track service intervals, coordinate repairs, and help reduce downtime.
• Work with operations and management to prioritize equipment readiness.
• Fabricate hydraulic hoses and replace fittings, seals, and related components.
• Use diagnostic tools, telematics, manuals, and service information to troubleshoot issues.
• Perform DOT-level inspections when required.
• Safely use rigging, hoists, cranes, and lifting equipment.
• Document work performed, parts used, and inspection findings.
• Assist with parts inventory, ordering, and shop supply management.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop, tools, and equipment.
• Complete field repairs as needed.
• Follow all safety policies, including lockout/tagout, PPE, and equipment isolation.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and required training.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Strong leadership skills with foreman or team lead experience.
• Advanced mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, heavy equipment, and light-duty vehicles.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic issues.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and service guides.
• Effective communication with shop staff, operators, and management.
• Skilled with diagnostic software, telematics, tools, and repair equipment.
• Basic welding, fabrication, and hydraulic hose repair skills preferred.
• Proficient with digital work-order or maintenance systems.
• Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical school training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or automotive technology preferred.
• 5+ years of experience as a heavy equipment, diesel, or fleet mechanic required.
• Previous experience in a foreman, lead mechanic, or supervisory role required.

Certifications and Licenses

• Valid driver’s license required.
• Diesel or Medium/Heavy Truck certifications preferred
• Must pass pre-employment and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing per company policy.

Work Environment

• Work performed in shop and outdoor field environments.
• Exposure to loud noise, moving machinery, vibration, fumes, dust, and varying weather conditions.
• Travel to remote job sites for field service work may be required.
• Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime based on operational needs.

Physical Demands

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing on and off equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to lift, push, and carry 50–75 lbs regularly; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs with assistance.
• Ability to work in confined spaces, awkward positions, or elevated areas.
• Manual dexterity required to handle tools, parts, and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to work in hot, cold, or inclement weather conditions for extended periods.

Schedule

• Monday through Friday, typically 10–12-hour shifts, depending on project needs.
• Overtime, night shifts, and weekend work may be required to meet production and maintenance demands.
