Job Description

Under the direction of the Manager of Technical Services, the Sign Technician maintains inventory, tools and supplies for the sign shop and makes signs per Manual Uniform Traffic Control devices (MUTCD). This position is covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for assembling signs per MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices).Inventories and purchases supplies necessary to create, assemble and install traffic signs.Operates office and shop equipment.Receives and distributes work orders.Assists sign installers with installing signs and applying road markings (paint, hot, heat applied).Oversees part time workers when applicable and directs staff and provides materials as needed.Maintains and controls school flashers.Performs traffic counts, manual and mechanical, at intersections and overall road usage.Works with inter-governmental agencies to make signs and write up orders.Communicates with public on phone and in person regarding traffic signs.Calls utility companies for locates.Performs driveway inspections as needed.Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GEDValid Driver's License to operate County owned vehicles for sign installation and maintenancePrevious experience or training in work zone traffic control, signs level International Municipal Sign Association (IMSA) and (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) MUTCD preferredComputer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software to create signs and cut out with plotterAbility to use shop and hand tools including, but not limited to drill press, band saw, grinder and squeeze rollerAbility to use GPS to locate all signsAbility to use the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for sign placementValid Driver's License to operate County owned vehicles for sign installation and maintenanceCertification of Work Zone Traffic Control and Signs 1 through International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) within the first year of employmentArc Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) license within first year of employmentAbility to drive a fork lift

DIFFICULTY OF WORK:The Sign Technician performs work that is moderately complex and relatively standardized when operating office and shop equipment. Thorough knowledge of MUTCD is needed to assemble signs and assist in installing signs and applying road markers.RESPONSIBILITY:The Sign Technician performs work that requires a moderate degree of care and skill to protect tools, material and equipment. The Sign Technician works with under moderate supervision and is given complete instructions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Sign Technician works in and around traffic requiring some standing, walking and sitting, frequent lifting up to sixty pounds, with some pushing and pulling up to sixty pounds. Some bending, squatting, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling and frequently climbing ladders and uneven surfaces is required. Must be able to distinguish color, frequent attention to detail, visual inspection and eye/hand coordination is required. The Sign Technician has some exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals and fall hazards with very frequent exposure to temperature extremes working outside.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:Manager of Technical Services

HOURS:7:00 am - 3:30 pm with the ability to be on-call 24/7; overtime as required
