Job Description

STV is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Signal Engineering Technician to join our growing Signals team. This position is ideal for an engineering professional with experience in railroad and transit signal systems who also possesses strong CADD production capabilities. The successful candidate will support the planning, design, drafting, and delivery of signal and train control systems for major transportation infrastructure projects throughout North America.

This role combines traditional engineering responsibilities with hands-on development of design documents using industry-standard CAD platforms. The Signal Engineer will work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative signaling solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare signal system designs for railroad, commuter rail, transit, and light rail projects.

  • Develop signal plans, layouts, circuit drawings, application designs, and construction documents.

  • Produce and maintain engineering drawings using AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenRail, or similar CADD platforms.

  • Assist in the design of:

  • Interlockings

  • Wayside signal systems

  • Train control systems

  • Grade crossing warning systems

  • Positive Train Control (PTC) interfaces

  • Communications-based train control (CBTC) support systems

  • Develop signal layouts, control line drawings, aspect charts, and equipment location plans.

  • Coordinate designs with track, communications, traction power, OCS, civil, structural, and operations disciplines.

  • Prepare specifications, technical reports, cost estimates, and construction packages.

  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and design modifications during construction.

  • Support field investigations, site visits, testing activities, and commissioning efforts.

  • Maintain compliance with AREMA, FRA, APTA, client, and project-specific design standards.

  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control reviews of engineering deliverables.

  • Support project schedules and collaborate with project teams to meet budget and delivery objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 4+ years of experience in railroad, transit, or transportation signal engineering.

  • Experience preparing signal design documents and construction plans.

  • Strong proficiency with:

  • AutoCAD

  • MicroStation

  • OpenRail Designer (preferred)

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge of railroad and transit signaling principles and practices.

  • Familiarity with AREMA guidelines and applicable railroad/transit standards.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred but not required.

  • EIT/FE certification.

  • Experience working with transit agencies, commuter rail operators, freight railroads, or design-build projects.

  • Familiarity with:

  • PTC systems

  • CBTC systems

  • Interlocking design

  • Crossing warning systems

  • System integration activities

  • Experience with ProjectWise, Bentley applications, or other transportation design platforms.

  • Previous field construction support, testing, or commissioning experience.

Compensation Range:

$95,975.90 - $109,686.74
