South Dakota Agricultural Nasda Field/ Phone Enumerator Part Time- Beresford, SD
Overview
Job Description
The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented part-time Field Enumerator to connect with agricultural producers and collect reliable survey information. This role combines relationship-building, independent work, and a commitment to completing assignments in support of agriculture and rural communities.
Starting pay is $17.75 per hour, with opportunities for merit-based wage increases. Mileage is reimbursed for approved work travel. This part-time role combines telephone interviews from home with required field assignments.
ABOUT NASDA
NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association that supports the state departments of agriculture across all fifty states and four U.S. territories. Since 1972, NASDA has partnered with USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service to collect accurate agricultural data from farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses.
As a NASDA Field Enumerator, you help tell the story of American agriculture while representing an organization committed to professionalism, service, and a positive work environment.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FIELD ENUMERATOR
You must perform both field and telephone work: interview farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural businesses in person and by phone, and travel to designated fields to perform crop counts and collect samples. Maintain accurate, legible records of interviews, crop counts, sample collection, mileage, expenditures, and hours worked.
You independently plan calls and visits, follow through on commitments, and meet deadlines. Telephone interviews require an operable telephone and a home workspace free from distractions; field duties require travel using a reliable personal vehicle. The role combines flexibility with responsibility for organizing your time and solving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A FIELD ENUMERATOR
- Experience multitasking in an energetic, deadline-oriented work environment
- Ability to positively represent NASDA and the benefits of enumerators in all survey actions
- Ability to perform crop counts and collect field samples in designated fields; this will require traveling on dirt roads, walking on uneven ground, and carrying 40 lbs for 300 yards.
- Ability to maintain a reliable personal vehicle
- Ability to perform both field and telephone work, including conducting interviews both in person and by phone with farm operators and other individuals
- Knowledge about computers or iPads
You are comfortable talking with producers, listening to concerns, and earning trust. You explain the value of participation, address objections respectfully, and gain cooperation without authority or pressure. Persistent without being pushy, you respect operators' decisions and stay focused on accurate work and timely completion.
If you communicate clearly, enjoy contributing to a team, and take satisfaction in solving problems and reaching goals, we encourage you to apply.
WORK SCHEDULE
This part-time position offers a flexible schedule that may occasionally include evenings, Saturdays, and non-major holidays. Work is never scheduled on Sundays or major holidays. Availability during peak survey periods is important. Weather, seasonal farm responsibilities, and community functions may affect work hours.
