Job Description

Special Education (Social & Emotional Learning) Teacher

Job Summary:

The SEL Teacher provides opportunities for students to learn, practice, and demonstrate social-emotional skills within academic contexts. You will be responsible for teaching academic and social-emotional learning lessons to students using evidence-based strategies and programs such as restorative or social-emotional learning circles. You will also partner with special education and general education teachers, the administrative team, and parents to discuss students' individual needs and to develop and implement intervention plans.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide academic and social-emotional learning instruction throughout the school day, giving students the opportunity to learn and practice SEL skills along with academics.
  • Directly teach social and emotional skills, emotion regulation strategies, and conflict resolution skills to individual students and small groups.
  • Proactively identify ways to increase inclusion opportunities for students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to understand student needs, identify appropriate interventions, and modify curriculum for students as needed.
  • Gather and analyze behavior data to monitor student progress towards goals.
  • As needed, meet with parents, counselors, and agency representatives regarding SEL or behavioral issues.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current with SEL research and best practices to be implemented in the classroom. Knowledge of positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers throughout the district.
  • Supervise education assistants and attendants in the classroom.
  • Implement behavior plans.
  • Work well with students with disabilities, teachers and parents/guardians of students with disabilities.
  • Provide both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and general education teachers.
  • Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education and transition needs, instructional goals, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Demonstrate specialized knowledge of teaching students with IEPs.
  • Collect instructional data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Interpret both formal and informal classroom-based assessment results to guide instructional decisions.
  • Administer and interpret formal assessments as appropriate.
  • Utilize positive reinforcement and behavior strategies to instruct students in appropriate behaviors.
  • Provide direction, and supervision for all paraeducators assigned to the classroom.
  • Compile and maintain thorough, accurate and compliant special education files.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Work cooperatively as a member of the educational team.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and responsible use of leave.
  • Follow professional ethics in all work related activities.
  • Comply with all school, district, state and federal guidelines and Roane County Board of Education policies.
  • Complete yearly restraint training and exhibit fitness to implement techniques learned in restraint training.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid TN Teachers License with appropriate endorsement code.
    • Required endorsement: 461:Special Education Comprehensive (CDC)
  • Position entails standing, walking, bending, stooping, and possible physical interventions to maintain a safe learning environment. The position may require assisting with lifting, moving or positioning students and/or changing diapers as needed.
  • Satisfactory background check
  • Pass drug screening
