School Summary
New Mexico Connections Academy (NMCA) is a tuition-free, virtual public school serving students in grades 4-12 throughout the state. The school is authorized by the New Mexico Public Education Commission, and governed by an independent Governing Council. The school is operated by New Mexico Connections Academy, a government entity, to provide its educational program and other services. NMCA is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, an accrediting division of AdvancED.
Position Summary
The Special Education Coordinator is a 12 month position (220 day) that supports the implementation, compliance, and effectiveness of special education services within a virtual learning environment. This role collaborates closely with case managers, teachers, families, and school leadership to ensure students receive appropriate services and supports while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. The coordinator assists with LEA/IEP meetings, compliance monitoring, data management, student records verification, related service provider contracting and daily operational support for the Special Populations Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Compliance & Student Services
Assist with scheduling, coordinating, and participating in virtual LEA/IEP meetings.
Support case managers with questions regarding IEP compliance, timelines, documentation, accommodations, and virtual service delivery.
Monitor compliance timelines and assist with ensuring timely completion of evaluations, annual reviews, and progress reporting.
Assist in verifying both physical and digital special education files for compliance and accuracy.
Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of student records in virtual systems and platforms.
Virtual Program Support
Collaborate with teachers and staff to support implementation of accommodations and services in the online learning environment.
Assist families and staff with understanding virtual special education processes and expectations.
Support communication between families, related service providers, and school teams to ensure continuity of services.
Help troubleshoot and resolve operational concerns related to virtual special education services.
Data & Reporting
Pull and organize special education data related to caseloads, timelines, attendance, compliance indicators, and student progress.
Assist the Special Populations Director with reports, audits, monitoring activities, and state reporting requirements.
Maintain accurate records within student information systems and special education platforms.
Collaboration & Leadership Support
Serve as a resource and support contact for case managers and instructional staff.
Collaborate with the Special Populations Director on department initiatives, compliance reviews, and continuous improvement efforts.
Assist with staff training and communication related to special education procedures and best practices in a virtual setting.
Participate in department meetings, professional development, and cross-functional collaboration with school leadership teams.
Additional Responsibilities
Assist with onboarding and supporting new case managers and staff members.
Support organization of digital documentation systems and compliance tracking tools.
Perform additional duties assigned by the Special Populations Director.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
Valid special education teaching license or related certification preferred.
Experience in special education, case management, compliance, or virtual education preferred.
Knowledge of IDEA, IEP processes, and state/federal compliance requirements.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms, Google Workspace/Microsoft Office, student information systems, and digital documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting virtual or online learning environments.
Experience facilitating or supporting virtual LEA/IEP meetings.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Ability to build positive relationships with families, staff, and service providers in a virtual setting.
Work Environment
Remote/virtual work environment with weekly in-person travel to Santa Fe office for file audit
Regular attendance at virtual meetings during school hours is required.
Requires occasional travel for training, school events, and state testing.
Must be able to use a personal electronic device and email address for 2-step authentication.
