Job Description
Job Title: Special Education TeacherSupervisor: Reports to the Building Principal or other appropriate School AdministratorTerms of Employment: 190 DaysFLSA: Exempt
Essential Duties
1. Plan, prepare, and deliver specialized instruction designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.
2. Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations.
3. Conduct ongoing assessments to identify student strengths, needs, and progress toward IEP goals.
4. Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications are implemented.
5. Establish and communicate clear instructional objectives aligned to grade-level standards and individualized student goals.
6. Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
7. Provide differentiated instruction using a variety of evidence-based teaching strategies.
8. Monitor student progress and collect data to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and interventions.
9. Prepare and maintain accurate and complete special education records, including IEPs, progress reports, and evaluation documentation.
10. Participate in eligibility, IEP, manifestation determination, and other special education meetings as required.
11. Collaborate with parents, guardians, administrators, and related service providers to support student success.
12. Ensure all special education services are delivered in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
13. Utilize instructional technology and adaptive resources to support student learning and accessibility.
14. Provide direct instruction in academic, behavioral, social, communication, and functional skills as appropriate.
15. Develop and implement behavior intervention plans when necessary.
16. Monitor and support student achievement in both general education and special education settings.
17. Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents regarding academic and behavioral progress.
18. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
19. Supervise and collaborate with instructional assistants, paraprofessionals, and support staff as assigned.
20. Participate in school, department, district meetings, and professional development activities.
21. Stay current on best practices, legal requirements, and developments in special education.
22. Cooperate in planning, implementing, and evaluating the school's educational program.
23. Foster positive and effective communication with parents and guardians.
Other DutiesPerform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
Job Specifications
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required)
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher from an accredited college or university.
- Certification as required by the state of South Carolina in Special Education Learning Disabilities or multicategorical
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and other applicable special education laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement IEPs and specialized instructional programs.
- Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and data-management skills.
- Other professional and personal qualifications deemed necessary to fulfill assigned responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand, and reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, and crouch. Duties may involve risk resulting from attending to students' behavioral needs.Additional physical requirements include the following:
- Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 25 pounds;
- Sufficiently mobile to ensure the safety of students;
- Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus;
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
- Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
- Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; and
- Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone
