Job Description

Job Title: Special Education Teacher 

Job Summary

Special Education Teacher (Maternity Leave Coverage) for grades 5th and 6th to provide targeted instruction and support to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) during a temporary leave period. This role focuses on addressing each student’s unique learning needs while collaborating with staff to ensure access to grade-level curriculum for all learners.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain positive, supportive relationships with students
  • Provide direct instruction in one-to-one, small group, and inclusive classroom settings
  • Plan and deliver lessons aligned with individual student needs as outlined in IEPs
  • Modify assignments and homework to support student access and success
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers on instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications
  • Participate as an active member of the support services team
  • Conduct informal assessments to monitor student progress
  • Implement and, as needed, update IEP goals and objectives
  • Write and maintain IEP documentation reflecting current performance, next steps, and grade-level expectations
  • Complete trimester progress reports during the coverage period
  • Monitor and support students’ academic, behavioral, and social development
  • Communicate regularly with families, including scheduling and facilitating IEP meetings as needed
  • Promote student independence by helping students:
    • Identify strengths
    • Recognize areas of need
    • Understand their learning profiles
    • Develop effective learning strategies

Additional Responsibilities

  • Meet all timelines in compliance with state and federal regulations during the coverage period
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date student records in accordance with guidelines
  • Keep communication logs current
  • Maintain strict confidentiality
  • Follow through on supervisor recommendations and required timelines

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts licensure in Moderate Special Needs required

Position Details

  • This is a temporary position to cover a maternity leave
  • Anticipated dates: September 1, 2026- January 31, 2027
  • Maximum of 30 hours per week.
