Job Description

Special Education Teacher needed in Brooklyn Year round full time position.
Summary Under the supervision of the Principal, implement an intensive, behavioral model, individually and/or in a group, based on the theories of applied behavior analysis or TEACCH principles and in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP/IFSP).ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assess students' developmental levels and design individualized plans utilizing behavioral approach based on theories of applied behavioral analysis and/or TEACCH principles.
  • Conduct preference assessments regularly, to establish reinforcement package and implement motivational (token) systems that allow for choices in packages.
  • Create developmentally sound and appropriate IEP goals and objectives focusing on areas of strengths, areas for improvement, and preferences for re-enforcers and motivational strategies.
  • Prepare daily schedule/lesson plan for each student with activities aligned to NYS Pre-Kindergarten Foundation for the Common Core Standards or NYS Common Core Standards, informed by authentic assessment data, which advance school readiness goals and reflect the objectives contained in IEP; prepare Progress Reports and update IEP as needed; participate in review meetings.
  • Collect and analyze empirical data daily, and design program that is based on results of empirical evidence.
  • Develop strategies and techniques facilitating generalization of concepts and promoting socialization for children. Employ training techniques that include prompting, pacing and utilization of reinforcement strategies.
  • Create assignments for and oversee all student activities; coordinate Behavior Trainer Assistants' interactions with students; and monitor schedules for assistants.
  • Be role model of best practices for all staff, as well as provide educational perspective at team discussions.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all students' records, rosters, data collection books and other required paperwork. Maintain ongoing behavioral records, and write progress notes and summaries for each child, as needed.
  • Provide safe and appropriate learning environment for all students. Know signs of abuse and report all suspicions to appropriate school staff.
  • Maintain clean, orderly classrooms; sustain and store materials/equipment appropriately; and provide direct care as needed.
  • Ensure all students are exposed to variety of educational settings by scheduling trips into community
  • Implement elements of positive behavior supports and individual behavior support plans including physical interventions in emergency situations
  • Comply with all Agency & school policies and participate in all staff meetings & supervisory conferences, as scheduled
  • Ability to implement safe emergency physical interventions as part of HUGS, HUGS+, SCIP or other emerging Intervention protocols as needed.
REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Special Education or in process of obtaining it.
  • Ability to work effectively with children with autism.
  • Knowledge of signs of abuse and mandated reporting requirements as required by law.
  • Proven ability to provide expert supervision to staff on individual or group level, based on ongoing and current knowledge of theory, research and best practices in field of developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
  • Demonstrated success in communicating effectively and in establishing and maintaining relationships with broad base of constituents, including colleagues, teaching staff, students, family members, and external professional staff. Includes ability to present verbal information simply and concisely, demonstrate effective public speaking presence, be a shilled listener, and demonstrate excellent writing shills.
  • Must have solid organizational and multi-tasking shills and proven ability to make independent decisions, set appropriate program priorities, and handle time-sensitive and/or stressful situations.
