Job Description

Plans for, teaches and facilitates learning for students with physical, emotional, cognitive, or learning disabilities. Creates a positive learning environment, adapts curriculum materials, and collaborates with support staff to help students reach their full potential. Provides interventions and accommodations to students to support the student's participation and progress in the general curriculum. Maintains progress monitoring and special education records. Collaborates with administration and members of the individual education program team to provide and implement I.E.P services to meet the needs of individual students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Maintains a classroom atmosphere conducive to enhancing interpersonal relationships social skills problem resolution and decision making while achieving academic success.

  • Continuously assesses and evaluates progress toward an Individual Education Program (IEP) goal(s).

  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that will be utilized in the general education setting.

  • Plans for and guides the learning process to help students achieve their program goals and objectives.

  • Supports the ongoing curriculum development in the identified content area.

  • Establishes a cooperative and collaborative relationship with students and staff.

  • Maintains open communication with the IEP team members.

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record keeping lesson planning and student progress toward IEP goals.

  • Collaborates with general education and related support staff regarding student progress and participation in the general education curriculum.

  • Develops a working knowledge of students on caseload as it pertains to providing special education services.

  • Conducts formal and informal diagnostic observations and assessments.

  • Complies with Nebraska Department of Education rule 51 guidelines.

  • Adapts general education lessons to meet the unique needs of students.

  • Monitors and assesses student progress, adjusting strategies as needed.

  • Fosters a safe, supportive, and engaging classroom environment.

  • Prepares students for transitions between grades and post-secondary plans.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school required.

  • Endorsement as a Special Education Generalist K-8, 6-12; K-12 depending on the grade level for which they are being hired.

  • Current Nebraska Teaching Certificate (or the ability to obtain one per Rule 21) endorsed in appropriate subject required.

  • Experience with behavior management and positive reinforcement techniques required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous classroom teaching experience in the field preferred.

  • Experience working with students across a range of disabilities preferred.

  • Familiarity with IEP software and data tracking tools preferred.

  • Ability to lead paraprofessionals and support staff preferred.

  • Creative problem-solving and instructional design skills preferred.
