Job Description

Special Education Teacher (Self-Contained)

Direct Supervisor/s: Principal, Assistant Principal

Special education teachers are in self-contained classes under the direct supervision of the campus principal, with additional oversight from the Student Support Services Department at the Central Office. Special Education teachers are expected to help create an inclusive environment for students with disabilities, set high expectations, and deliver targeted instruction. The ideal candidate is highly knowledgeable about the Common Core State Standards and research-based instructional strategies for diverse learners.

General responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as lead teacher in a small self-contained classroom of students with IEPs, creating a positive learning environment with appropriate and effective structures and routines

  • Planned and implemented instruction in all content areas that provided access to grade-level curriculum through scaffolds and appropriate accommodations; used alternative curriculum as appropriate to address students' developmental needs.

  • Collaborating with related service providers to plan instruction and implement accommodations

  • Writing and implementing IEPs designed with student, parent, and general education teacher input, various data sources, target priority skills, and meaningful accommodations and classroom supports.

  • Regularly monitor students on IEP goals and grade-level standards; write IEP progress reports using student data describing progress toward goals.

  • Deliver targeted instruction to students individually or in small groups; use data to track and communicate student progress and propose adaptations to IEP programming.

  • Support the development of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) or informal behavior systems; hold students accountable for high behavioral expectations while supporting their social-emotional development.

  • Meet all compliance deadlines

  • Engage families meaningfully to discuss their child's progress and include input on IEPs, evaluation decisions, and Secondary Transition Plans as needed.

  • Participate in the Center City PCS learning community via PLCs, campus/district professional development, and weekly campus-based grade-level planning sessions.

  • Reflect on teaching by accepting ongoing, informal feedback and implementing changes accordingly.

  • Follow school-wide procedures for attire, behavior, and punctuality (teacher hours are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM)

  • Attend and participate in occasional school events outside of regular school hours.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Special Education (preferred) or a related field

  • Licensure in Special Education or plans to obtain licensure in Special Education

  • Strong familiarity with the Common Core Coherence Map for Math, with experience teaching the Eureka Math curriculum, preferred

  • Prior teaching experience, preferably in a self-contained classroom

  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in classroom management, instructional strategies to support diverse learning needs, and use of data to support instruction, with evidence of growth

  • Must be highly organized

  • Must have working knowledge of federal and local special education laws

  • References that reflect a high standing with a past employer

  • Able to lift to 10 pounds and able to stand for long hours
