Job Description

Special Education Teacher – Non-Public School | Tacoma, WA

Whether you’re new or experienced, there’s a place for you here.

If you care about students who learn differently and want your work to matter every day, let’s talk. Lilac Learning Center is growing our Tacoma site, and we’re adding a Special Education Teacher to the team.

New to teaching? You’re exactly who we’re looking for. New and recently credentialed teachers are encouraged to apply, and you’ll get the training, mentorship, and day-to-day support to do this work well.

Bring ABA experience and a SPED license? Even better. Your background won’t go unnoticed here. You’ll have room to mentor our Behavior Technicians, step into classroom leadership, and help shape how our Tacoma program grows.

Either way, you won’t be on an island. You’ll work side by side with an experienced Special Education Teacher, BCBAs, and Behavior Technicians in a setting that blends education and ABA. We keep caseloads conservative on purpose, so you can focus on your students.

About Our School & Program

Lilac Learning Center is a Non-Public School serving autistic students and neurodivergent learners ages 5–22. Our program pairs special education with ABA, with an emphasis on individualized instruction, dignity, and safety. Our culture is warm, a little nerdy, and serious about getting better at what we do.

  • Year-round school setting

  • On-site in Tacoma – not a remote position

What You’ll Do

Instruction & Student Support

  • Get to know each student and build learning environments that fit them

  • Plan and teach alongside your team, and adjust as students grow

  • Support students through hard moments, including physical management procedures when needed (training provided)

Team Leadership

  • Coach and guide the Lead Technicians and Behavior Technicians in your classroom

  • Share day-to-day responsibilities and keep student procedures consistent

Family & Program Support

  • Keep parents and caregivers in the loop on student progress

  • Contribute to curriculum as our program grows

  • Pitch in on classroom and facility upkeep and other duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For

  • A current Special Education license

  • Clear written and verbal communication

  • Good organization and steady problem-solving

  • Comfort working independently and as part of a team

  • Sound judgment, openness to feedback, and respect for the chain of command

Even better if you bring:

  • Previous ABA experience

No classroom experience yet? That’s okay. If you hold the credential (or are close) and bring the right attitude, we’ll teach you the rest.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • A growing program where you can help shape curriculum and how we do things

  • A real ABA + education partnership with conservative caseloads and people who have your back

  • Professional development that’s actually funded: monthly full PD days and half-day Fridays

  • Support for conferences, CEUs, and engagement with university faculty and graduate students

  • Mileage and expense reimbursement

  • Tuition discounts with Mary Baldwin University

  • Bonusly employee recognition program

  • Free snacks and meals in the employee kitchen

Equal Opportunity & Inclusion

We are an equal opportunity employer and proudly welcome candidates of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. We strongly encourage applications from neurodivergent and disabled educators and from those who share our commitment to this work.
