This job maintains and ensures complete and appropriate drug therapy in a multidisciplinary pharmaceutical care environment. Assumes responsibility for the management of pharmacy services with the goal of ensuring the patient receives complete and appropriate drug therapy and improving patient outcomes. Provides drug information to patients and healthcare providers. Works to resolve prior authorizations and all insurance billing on behalf of the patient and provider. Oversees the Patient Advocate team. Performs drug utilization review and checks for appropriateness. Works with Specialty Fulfillment team to ensure complete and timely receipt of medications and compliance with drug therapy.

Ochsner Specialty Pharmacy is part of Ochsner Health System and is the largest integrated delivery network (IDN) specialty pharmacy in our region. We manage specialty medications which have a complex profile that require intensive patient management.  Some specialty medications also require special handling. We provide personalized patient management services that include training in how to use these medications, comprehensive treatment assessment, and patient monitoring.

We collaborate with the healthcare team to manage the patient throughout the continuum of care. These expert services that we provide drive adherence and persistency, proper management of medication dosing and side effects, and ensure appropriate medication use. Our patient-centric model is designed to provide a comprehensive and coordinated model of care for patients with chronic illnesses and complex medical conditions, achieve superior clinical and economic outcomes, and expedite patient access to care.

Education

Required – Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy

Preferred – Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

Work Experience

Required – None

Preferred – 2 years experience as pharmacist; Experience in specialty pharmacy

Preferred - Completion of a Pharmacy Residency preferred

Certification

Required – License to practice Pharmacy by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy

Preferred – Multi-state licensure

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Job Duties

  • Performs patient assessment and care.
  • Performs prior authorization and insurance resolution services.
  • Oversees the Patient Advocate team.
  • Communicates with patients, providers, and caregivers.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and continued education.
  • Participates in special projects/ committees as needed.
  • Maintains documentation relative to job.
  • Maintains and fosters an environment of teamwork and engagement.
  • Performs all job duties in accordance with Ochsner Specialty Pharmacy policies and accrediting bodies.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.

The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following:  Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force.
