Job Description

Sr. Specialist Mechanical Engineer – Design (Level 4, Contract) Location: Los Angeles, CA (Onsite) Schedule: 9/80 work schedule Employment Type: Contract | Potential conversion to direct hire Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Specialist Mechanical Design Engineer (Level 4) to support the design and development of turbomachinery and propulsion hardware for advanced liquid rocket engine systems. This onsite contract role offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical aerospace programs, collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to deliver high-performance mechanical designs that meet demanding system, cost, and producibility requirements. Eligibility Requirements: • U.S. Citizenship required (no dual citizenship) • Role may convert to a direct hire position • May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance Key Responsibilities As a senior contributor, you will apply advanced mechanical design principles to complex propulsion systems used in spacecraft and missile applications. Primary Duties Design and develop turbomachinery components and assemblies for liquid rocket engines Create and interpret 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings Perform tolerance analyses and trade studies to support design optimization Evaluate and incorporate technical input from suppliers and manufacturing partners Collaborate with analysis, manufacturing, quality, project engineering, and customer support teams to improve producibility and cost efficiency Plan and execute design tasks with limited direction in an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment Essential Functions 50% – Mechanical Design & Development Execute detailed design tasks for turbomachinery hardware. Develop CAD models, drawings, tolerance studies, component specifications, and procedures. Support trade studies and design decisions aligned with performance and manufacturing goals. 20% – Drawing Creation & Design Release Prepare engineering drawings using Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards. Participate in design reviews, team meetings, and manage CAD files through the design release process. 20% – Production & Hardware Support Support shop floor and supplier production activities. Assist with nonconforming hardware resolution, process planning, configuration changes, and production meetings. Oversee installation, testing, and operational support of designed hardware. 10% – Technical Documentation & Presentations Prepare engineering reports, tolerance studies, failure investigations, and technical close-out documentation. Develop and deliver presentations for internal and external stakeholders. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline Minimum 2 years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience Strong mechanical engineering foundation in machine design, fluid mechanics, and strength of materials Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100 Experience designing complex mechanical systems Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint General understanding of aerospace materials and manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing, casting, welding, brazing, machining, and heat treatment Preferred Qualifications Experience with CREO Parametric CAD modeling and Windchill PLM Knowledge of rocket or ramjet propulsion systems at the component or system level Experience with rotating machinery and turbopump components (volutes, inducers, rotors, stators) Surface CAD modeling of airfoil and bladed geometries Background in propulsion system integration with flight vehicles or test facilities Advanced degree or coursework toward an advanced degree Work Environment & Physical Requirements This role requires mobility in both office and production environments, including occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, use of standard office and shop equipment, and potential travel by air or automobile. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required. Flexibility to work varying shifts or hours may be necessary to support program needs.
