Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The EHS Leader provides leadership, mentoring, and direction for the Starr Plant. This responsibility includes development, implementation, and evaluation of critical safety and environmental process and procedures to achieve a zero-incident environment. This position leads and applies technical abilities to engage employees at all levels of the organization to sustain these safety and environmental processes and procedures and to ensure that all employees are Safer Together. The EHS Leader is a member of the Starr Leadership Team.

Reports to: Plant Leader

Span of Control: Direct reports include one salaried employee and four primary employees

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY:

  • Live the Safety Stand: adhere to the environmental, health, and safety responsibilities so all employees are safer together
  • Demonstrate a commitment to employee health and safety, particularly through a commitment to zero injuries, awareness of hazards, and a strong understanding of legislative requirements in all aspects of the operation

EHS STRATEGY AND SUPPORT:

  • Set strategic direction to cultivate a positive safety culture, drive prioritization, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS programs and tools and ensure Company and compliance goals / requirements are achieved
  • Lead functionally the EHS staff to maximize organizational impact by fostering collaborative interactions, clearly communicating goals, objectives, and expectations, and providing opportunities for professional development
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and guidelines that support Owens Corning business needs
  • Leads or supports sustainability initiatives targeting reduction of the Company's footprint in energy consumption, waste, water, air, and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Oversees plant wastewater treatment operations, including compliance, monitoring, and continuous improvement
  • Evaluate regulatory trends to determine operational, financial, or other business impacts, and implement industry best practices
  • Set goals for key EHS indicators and report progress
  • Leads the EHS Pillar to drive continuous improvement initiatives as part of TPM
  • Champions and supports OC's healthy living initiatives and wellness

EHS PROGRAM, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES:

  • Proactively drive and sustain a strong safety culture throughout the plant by promoting, developing, and implementing OC EHS policies and standards
  • Direct and manage EHS compliance through program implementation and procedural development
  • Creating, implementing, and auditing EHS training programs, directing department personnel to provide EHS expertise in support of the business, and reviewing and interpreting global regulatory requirements
  • Provide leadership and guidance for EHS programs and compliance, supporting planned expansions or modifications of facilities or production processes, and developing behavior-based safety programs
  • Work effectively with cross-functional teams to meet EHS and business objectives
  • Manages Title V air permits and ensures ongoing regulatory compliance

DIRECT AUDIT AND RISK MANAGEMENT:

  • Identify potential risks to prevent or mitigate losses as appropriate (e.g., catastrophic, workers compensation, environmental, and property loss protection)
  • Perform due diligence in appropriate business transactions to protect the Company from past, current, or future liabilities
  • Support and coordinate EHS site audits and ensure regulatory compliance and policies / standards at operating facilities through surveys of physical conditions, observed activities, record reviews, and status of EHS Owens Corning programs
  • Enforce compliance with EHS regulations and policies
  • Provides site-level oversight of plant security and IT functions

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required (occupational safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, science or equivalent preferred)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional certification preferred (CSP, CIH, etc.)
  • Experience implementing or managing a strong safety culture in a matrix environment
  • Demonstrated success in coaching and leading teams
  • Managing and delivering results through projects and initiatives

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety compliance law and industrial hygiene
  • Ability to identify hazards, critical processes, and system needs and implement appropriate action plans
  • Ability to establish agreement and consensus with management
  • Ability to effectively engage employees is critical
  • Ability to initiate and lead cross-functional teams and management / union committees to achieve objectives
  • Adept at developing and delivering safety training
  • Skilled at driving and managing change
  • Ability to integrate resources across the organization
