Job Description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for preparing and analyzing financial schedules, performing general accounting tasks, and managing full cycle accounts payable processes. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent relevant accounting experience. This role supports the month-end close process, prepares and files state sales tax returns, reconciles accounts, and ensures the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. The Staff Accountant must possess strong attention to detail, advanced Microsoft Excel skills, and the ability to work effectively within tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare and file state sales tax and research and respond to customer sales tax inquiries.
  • Coordinate and ensure compliance with business licensing requirements

Financial Analysis & Account Reconciliation

  • Prepare and analyze financial support documents to ensure accuracy.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Verify and reconcile corporate credit card charges.

Month-End Close & General Accounting

  • Assist in the month-end closing process, ensuring all accounts are reconciled and closed on time.
  • Prepare and post journal entries to reflect financial activities.
  • Maintain the fixed asset system, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting.
  • Support cash management activities, including managing payment exceptions and processing of ACH/wire payments

Financial Data Management & Reporting

  • Maintain and update Excel spreadsheets for various markets, customers, and accounts, managing large datasets efficiently.
  • Generate supplemental reports as required by management for financial analysis.

Key Performance Metrics

  • Ensure the timely and accurate completion of the month-end closing process, with all accounts fully reconciled each month.
  • Improve the efficiency and accuracy of financial data management, including Excel models and schedules.
  • Foster effective cross-functional collaboration within the Finance team and other departments to enhance communication and overall workflow.
  • Maintain compliance with closing reconciliations and reporting requirements for affiliated businesses.
  • Support audits, including external and tax audits.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of pivot tables, v-lookups, and complex formulas.
  • Familiarity with NetSuite or similar accounting systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Avalara and/or Sovos tax systems is a plus
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards.
  • Ability to manage large data sets and perform detailed analysis with high accuracy.
  • Knowledge of state sales tax regulations and filing requirements.

Requirements

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of accounting experience in a similar role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy in all tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High degree of professional skepticism and willingness to ask questions and learn.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask effectively.
