Job Description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

As a Staff Electrical Engineer on the WHOOP Hardware team, you will lead the architecture, design, and delivery of complex embedded hardware subsystems within highly integrated human performance products. You will work closely with Electrical, Mechanical, Firmware, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Software teams to translate system-level requirements into robust, production-ready hardware.

WHOOP products integrate wireless connectivity, sensing, power management, and user-facing functionality in a small, low-power form factor, requiring strong mixed-signal design fundamentals and rigorous systems thinking. This role emphasizes end-to-end subsystem performance, including power, timing, noise, latency, interoperability, and manufacturability. You will be a hardware technical leader who can define requirements, influence architecture choices, and partner effectively across bring-up, tuning, validation, and production ramp.

This role is well suited to an engineer with deep expertise in at least one electrical engineering domain and the curiosity and judgment to expand into adjacent areas as product needs evolve.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the architecture and delivery of complex embedded hardware subsystems; own electrical specifications, performance metrics, risks, and execution plans.
  • Design low-power, high-performance mixed-signal hardware from component selection through system integration, including schematic capture and PCB layout/review.
  • Drive cross-functional tradeoffs across performance, power, size, thermal behavior, coexistence, reliability, and manufacturability in tightly integrated wearable products.
  • Define and verify subsystem requirements related to timing, synchronization, power modes, noise, latency, calibration, and interface behavior.
  • Translate system and product goals into measurable electrical requirements, validation plans, and subsystem-level success criteria.
  • Partner with firmware, software, and algorithm teams to define interfaces, control/data flows, observability hooks, and validation strategies for real-time embedded systems.
  • Lead bring-up, debug, and characterization using lab instrumentation; correlate bench behavior with device telemetry and end-to-end product performance.
  • Build analysis and validation workflows using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools, including test vectors, golden datasets, and automated characterization/regression methods.
  • Take primary ownership of a subsystem aligned with prior depth while stepping into adjacent technical areas as product needs evolve.
  • Mentor other engineers through design reviews, debugging strategy, and disciplined engineering execution.
  • Travel up to 15% domestically and internationally to partners, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 9+ years of relevant hardware engineering experience, including 5+ years operating at a senior level or above with meaningful subsystem ownership.
  • Proven ownership of embedded electronics from architecture through schematic, PCB layout/review (for example, Altium), bring-up, validation, and production release (for example, Arena).
  • Strong circuit design fundamentals spanning mixed-signal design, power, and digital interfaces in low-power embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated success delivering robust, interference-resilient, highly integrated subsystems under tight power, size, and performance constraints.
  • Experience defining and verifying timing, synchronization, interface, and performance requirements for embedded systems.
  • Hands-on debug and characterization expertise using standard lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and power analysis tools.
  • Strong systems instincts and the ability to translate product goals into hardware requirements, architecture decisions, interface definitions, and validation plans.
  • Effective cross-functional partner to firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and algorithm teams.
  • Data-driven validation mindset and tooling experience in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent to analyze captured datasets, automate characterization, and support regression testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through ambiguity, make sound engineering tradeoffs, and drive complex technical decisions to closure.
  • Depth in at least one complex embedded subsystem area, along with the ability and appetite to expand into adjacent domains.
  • Experience building miniaturized wearables or other highly integrated wireless consumer devices desired.
  • Experience bringing new platform capabilities or first-generation features from concept through production desired.
  • Experience owning one or more complex subsystems in products with demanding power, packaging, thermal, or coexistence constraints desired.
  • Prior success working across hardware, firmware, and software boundaries to tune end-to-end system performance desired.
  • Track record of growing beyond original domain expertise to lead adjacent technical areas desired.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing bring-up, supplier engagement, and design maturity through production ramp desired.
