Job Description

Staff Software Engineer

About Convr: Convr is an AI underwriting, data, and intelligent document automation workbench built for commercial P&C insurers. We help carriers, MGAs, and brokers accelerate premium growth, improve risk insights, and drive operational efficiency.

Founded in 2016, Convr transforms outdated, manual processes into structured, decision-ready workflows. Our modular platform manages underwriting from submission through quote with a purpose-built AI decisioning context engine - grounded in a commercial insurance ontology - ensuring complete data and smarter decisions, faster, while enabling a frictionless experience and superior performance.

As we scale, we're building a team shaping the future of commercial underwriting. Join us in modernizing commercial insurance with modern AI.

Role Overview: We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer who functions like a founder. This isn't a role for someone who waits for a perfectly groomed Jira ticket or a product manager to define every edge case. We need a seasoned engineer with the judgment to identify what needs to be built and the autonomy to execute the plan from start to finish. You will be expected to own entire workstreams, architecting solutions that balance rapid delivery with long-term stability. You should have "good taste" in software-knowing when to build for scale, when to keep it simple, and how to maintain an exceptional developer experience for the rest of the team.

What You'll be Doing:

  • Operate with Extreme Autonomy: You'll identify high-impact problems and solve them without needing a roadmap handed to you. You are your own project manager.
  • You care about clean abstractions, intuitive APIs, and high-quality code. You understand that how we build is just as important as what we build.
  • You will design and deploy AI-driven features, whether that's building autonomous agents to handle complex workflows or crafting sophisticated prompt assistants to enhance our product's intelligence.
  • You'll actively work to improve the developer experience, ensuring our tech stack stays modern, efficient, and a joy to work in.
  • Work across the stack: from database queries to API endpoints to UI/UX.
  • Write high-quality, type-safe, and maintainable code in Typescript.
  • Leverage modern React / Next.js patterns for performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate with product stakeholders and other engineers to shape technical direction.
  • Mentor teammates and establish engineering best practices.
  • Contribute to CI/CD, testing, and performance monitoring.

Who You Are:

  • You have thrived in high-growth, ambiguous environments. You are comfortable with "moving fast and breaking things," but you have the wisdom to know which things shouldn't be broken.
  • You have hands-on experience building with AI. You understand the nuances of LLMs, agentic frameworks, and the practical challenges of deploying AI to production.
  • While this is an individual contributor role, you lead by example. You set the bar for quality and mentor others through your architectural decisions and code reviews.
  • You have a proven track record of making sound technical trade-offs under pressure without needing constant validation from leadership.

Experience Requirements:

  • 10+ years of professional experience in full-stack or frontend development.
  • Strong proficiency in Typescript and modern React.
  • Experience with LangChain, OpenAI API, Anthropic, or custom agentic workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with Next.js App Router (server components, layouts, streaming, caching).
  • Background in UI/UX design or working closely with designers.
  • Strong experience implementing complex, data-heavy views with Tailwind and component libraries (shadcn/ui, Mantine, etc).
  • Experience with tRPC or equivalent type-safe API frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of frontend performance, state management, and accessibility.
  • Experience working in SaaS products or startups.
  • Ability to design scalable systems and write clean, maintainable code.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work autonomously.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Remote work opportunities
  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Company Paid Holidays
  • Insurance Coverage (medical, dental, vision, short-term & long-term disability, life insurance, and accident coverage)
  • 401K
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • The final compensation will be determined based on factors such as location, experience, education, skills, and industry knowledge.

Why Join Convr? Joining our team means becoming a vital part of a high-growth, entrepreneurial mission to redefine the commercial insurance industry. We've traded corporate silos for radical transparency and a shared ownership mentality, ensuring that every voice is heard, and no one is just a number. We believe in the power of flexibility because we know life happens, and we empower our people with the autonomy to maintain a genuine work-life balance. As a team of experts striving for excellence, we will challenge you to develop your career and sharpen your craft alongside passionate colleagues who are committed to your success as they are to our collective impact.
