Job Description
The StarPoint Summer Camp Education Intern serves as an assistant teacher for the StarPoint Summer Camp program and Kids Science Camp (for youth in grades 1–6) at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The intern will research, plan, and create three lessons that they will lead for their assigned cabin. To assist with this project, the intern will receive training in camp procedures and expectations, how to write a lesson plan, and how to include embedded assessments. The intern will hone their skills through planning and implementing an open house activity, assisting with camp preparation, teaching pre-written lessons, leading exhibit visits, facilitating camp projects, working with a classroom teacher to manage cabin culture, and interacting daily with campers.
Special consideration may be given to candidates with an academic background or experience in education, classroom, or museum settings.
Internship Duties
Develop and facilitate three unique cabin lessons based on weekly themes and StarPoint goals.
Plan an engaging activity for campers to complete during the StarPoint Open House for campers and their families.
Assist with camp preparation, such as making classroom decorations, organizing supplies, and prepping lesson materials.
Lead purposeful exhibit visits weekly for assigned cabins.
Facilitate camp projects as assigned, such as the Kindness Project, where campers are given project-based opportunities to express gratitude.
Serve as the assistant teacher to the lead teacher in one of the three cabins (rising 1st & 2nd graders, 3rd & 4th graders, and 5th & 6th graders) for StarPoint Summer Camp and Kids Science Camp with daily camp lessons, activities, exhibit visits, library visits, field trips, and classroom management.
Assist with evaluation efforts for StarPoint, such as transcribing camper work.
Serve as a chaperone for camp field trips.
Capture meaningful moments during camp using museum cameras.
Assist with building an extraordinary learning experience for each StarPoint camper by serving as a positive role model.
Contribute to an intern manual that will be referenced by future StarPoint Summer Camp Education Interns.
Follow all museum health and safety guidelines and maintain proper cleaning protocols.
Assist with other department projects and or events as needed.
Internship Requirements
Be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Have experience working with elementary-age children.
Preference will be given to juniors, seniors, or graduating seniors entering the workforce.
Have an academic background or experience in an educational, classroom, or museum setting.
Have strong oral and written communication skills.
Possess experience in providing exceptional customer service.
Demonstrate excellent organizational and research skills.
Have the ability to multitask.
Exhibit professional behavior and a responsible work ethic.
Have web research skills and a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Canva.
Must be available for the full duration of the internship (May 8 – August 7). Full-time availability is required during the core camp period (May 8 – July 31); hours may vary outside of those dates.
Must be available for some nights and weekends.
ADA Requirements
Must be able to observe children, monitor appropriate behavior, facilitate activities, create schedules, and lead instructional programs.
Must be able to communicate extensively with children and staff. Must be able to hear children’s voices and assist youth in emergencies.
Must be able to create and prepare program materials for distribution to groups of youth.
Must be able to lift to 25 lbs (can be accommodated if needed).
Must be able to move at a child’s pace and stand, kneel, or sit for extended periods of time.
