Job Description:

Position Summary

The SPM Specialist is responsible for educating, implementing, and supporting all functions of the Sterile Processing Management (SPM) system. This role ensures accurate tracking of surgical instruments, equipment, and inventory across the hospital. The Specialist partners closely with Sterile Processing, Surgical Services, and other clinical departments to maintain compliance, optimize workflows, and support safe, efficient patient care.

Key responsibilities

SPM System Management & Support

  • Educate, implement, and troubleshooting SPM features, including new modules, workflows, and system updates.
  • Assist Sterile Processing leadership and technicians in proper use of SPM and maintain expertise in system capabilities and industry standards.

Inventory Coordination & Tracking

  • Coordinate reprocessing and movement of inventory for all hospital departments using SPM.
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels, scanning points, and instrument locations across Main OR, Outpatient Surgery Center, and other clinical areas.
  • Manage instruments, missing lists, implants, loaners, consignment items, evaluations/trials, and equipment.

Workflow Optimization & Quality Reporting

  • Create and update process scanning points to ensure accurate tracking and workflow efficiency.
  • Coordinate repairs, product maintenance, and loaner/borrowed instrument needs.
  • Maintain quality and productivity reports within the tracking system and provide workflow data to Surgical Services leadership.

Training & Onboarding

  • Facilitate onboarding of new hires and SPM users through structured training exercises and one‑on‑one sessions.
  • Assess competency and ensure users demonstrate proficiency in SPM workflows.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between Sterile Processing, Surgical Services, and other departments to support operational needs.
  • Provide timely reporting and data insights to support decision‑making and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Fast‑paced clinical environment.
  • Frequent interaction with Sterile Processing, OR staff, and leadership.
  • May require occasional off‑shift support during system updates or training needs.

Experience

  • Two years of recent experience (within the last three years) in Sterile Processing is required.
  • Strong knowledge of SPM or similar instrument tracking systems required.
  • Understanding of sterile processing standards (AAMI, AORN, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, training, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze workflow data and generate meaningful reports.

Education

High school diploma, G.E.D. required. Completion of an accredited sterile processing course

Licensure/Certifications

Certification from HSPA - CRCST or CBSPD - CSPDT required
