The Role (What to Expect): The Structural QA Inspector supports the Structural QA Lead by verifying that all structural-related activities (e.g., on-site fabrication, testing, erection, welding, bolting, NDE activities) conform to engineering designs, industry codes, regulatory requirements, and standards. This position requires solid technical judgment and problem-solving skills to perform surveillance, audits, and inspections as directed by the Structural QA Lead. Responsibilities (What You'll Do):
  • Conduct surveillance and audits of structural steel fabrication, erection, welding, bolting, and installation to confirm that the contractor's QC program is being effectively implemented and maintained throughout all process units and utility systems.
  • Review and evaluate contractor QC records (weld logs, NDE reports, bolt installation records, MTRs, field tests) for accuracy and completeness; identify gaps, deficiencies, and trends in contractor QC documentation and report findings to the Structural QA Lead.
  • Witness and verify key structural testing and inspection activities, including weld fit-up/joint prep, weld visual, NDE, and bolt installation/torque, to confirm that contractor QC inspections and testing are being performed correctly, at the required frequency, and acceptance criteria are being met.
  • Perform audits and surveillance of contractor/subcontractor QC programs (inspection procedures, material control/traceability, WPS compliance, corrective actions, documentation); prepare findings, observations, and non-conformances with corrective actions for the Structural QA Lead.
  • Review structural material submittals, MTRs, heat traceability, PMI results, and weld consumable certifications to confirm contractor validation of material compliance; escalate discrepancies, substitutions, or missing certifications to the Structural QA Lead.
  • Identify and document QA discrepancies (welding, bolt installation, traceability, dimensional deviations, NDE, workmanship) with photos, measurements, and test data; track corrective action closeout per the project QA program.
  • Maintain QA surveillance records, audit reports, NCN logs, NDE observations, and field notes; communicate findings to the Structural QA Lead and contractor QC, and capture lessons learned for continuous improvement.
Requirements (What You'll Bring):
  • Minimum of 8 years' experience as a quality inspector on large-scale industrial projects with at least 3 years as a client/owner quality representative.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and analyze discipline-specific technical documents, and communicate effectively with contractor QC teams and the Structural QA Lead.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of quality assurance program requirements and key construction codes (e.g., AWS, IBC, AISC); proficiency with inspection tools (e.g., weld gauges, bridge cam gauges, digital calipers, hi-lo gauges, feeler gauge); working knowledge of NDE methods and procedures (RT, UT, MT, PT).
  • Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate, analyze, and help resolve complex quality issues and report QA findings with recommended corrective actions for nonconformances.
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of quality management principles and the ability to apply them throughout all phases of the project and system turnover walkdowns.
  • Ability to perform effectively within a high-performance, cross-functional organization with extremely tight timelines and aggressive commissioning goals.
Benefits Summary: Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate or annual salary only, unless otherwise stated.
