Structures & Bridge Design Intern

About This Position:

As an intern in Creighton Manning’s Structures Group, you’ll work with project engineers and project managers on real bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement, and transportation-related structure projects. You’ll help collect field data, develop concepts and drawings, prepare report sections, perform basic calculations and quantity estimates, and observe construction activities while learning how structural engineering decisions are made on active public infrastructure projects.

This internship is intended for students who want more than a “desk-only” experience. You’ll see how field observations, design criteria, calculations, drawings, estimates, and construction considerations connect to real bridge and transportation projects, with guidance from experienced structural engineers.

Essential Job Functions:

• Collect field data and document existing bridge conditions.
• Support specific tasks on larger assignments under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Perform standard engineering calculations and basic structural analyses.
• Prepare drawings, sketches, exhibits, and visual aids for design documents, reports, and presentations.
• Observe construction activities.
• Support design tasks for bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement, and other transportation-related structures.
• Prepare quantity calculations for construction cost estimates.
• Attend project meetings with senior staff to learn how technical decisions are discussed, documented, and advanced.
• Draft report sections, meeting notes, and other written documents for review by senior staff.
• Perform basic QA/QC tasks, including checking your own work for completeness, consistency, and calculation or drafting errors before review.
• Attend client, public, and project-team meetings with senior staff to observe how infrastructure projects move from planning through delivery.

Job Requirements:

Candidates should be working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline from an ABET/EAC-accredited program or approved equivalent. Strong candidates are self-motivated, organized, curious, willing to ask questions, and able to manage multiple assignments in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment. An interest in bridges and transportation infrastructure is preferred. 

Pay Range:

Albany, Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, White Plains, NY: $21.80/hour-$28/hour

Pay will be based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and position location.
