This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced structural engineer who thrives at the intersection of technical excellence, team leadership, project oversight, and business development. The Structures Group Deputy Manager will help oversee a team of engineers and designers supporting transportation projects, with a focus on bridge and structural design for roadway and rail clients.

The selected candidate will work in close partnership with the current Group Manager, receiving focused mentorship, hands-on leadership experience, and structured transition planning to ensure a smooth and successful progression into the lead role. Responsibilities include supporting high-quality project delivery, developing and mentoring staff, managing workload and budgets, and helping expand the structures practice through strong collaboration with clients and internal teams across the company.

This position offers meaningful leadership influence from day one, along with the guidance, support, and intentional development needed to confidently step into full group leadership as performance milestones are achieved.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Structures Group Manager in leading and supporting FHU’s Structures Group, including mentoring and developing staff, managing staffing needs, and overseeing quality control and quality assurance processes.
  • Serve as a technical leader for bridge and structural design projects ranging from small drainage structures to complex multi-span bridges, including concrete and steel girder structures.
  • Manage structures tasks on multidisciplinary transportation projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and coordination with other discipline leads.
  • Act as senior project engineer and project manager on assigned projects, serving as a primary client contact and supporting interviews, client meetings, and public presentations.
  • Support construction activities by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting field visits to verify compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Develop project budgets, scopes, fee estimates, and staffing plans, and monitor project financial performance including billing and accounts receivable.
  • Lead or support marketing and business development efforts related to structures work, including proposals and pursuit strategies, in coordination with regional and company leadership.
  • Collaborate with other discipline and group leaders to balance workload, assign appropriate staff, and ensure consistency and quality in FHU deliverables.
  • Promote staff growth through technical guidance, project management coaching, and encouragement of professional development.
  • Participate in strategic planning, financial management discussions, and operational decision-making to gain comprehensive understanding of group leadership responsibilities.
  • Gradually assume increasing responsibility for group operations, client relationships, and business development activities as part of the planned leadership transition.
  • Receive focused mentorship and coaching from the current Group Manager in areas including team leadership, conflict resolution, resource management, and performance management.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in bridge and structural design for transportation projects
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and managing or mentoring engineering staff.
  • Advanced experience with structural analysis and design software.
  • Experience with AASHTO standards and procedures; experience with Colorado DOT standards strongly preferred.
