Job Description

Studio Design Engineer Job Summary The Studio Design Engineer will act as the technical bridge between Styling Design, Engineering, Clay Modeling, Milling, shop personnel, tooling, and production functions while maintaining the studio design intent. This role is expected to create and innovate on a variety of challenging projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee the creation of complex concept layouts and develop new designs as well as re-designs using internal or external 3D models, clay models, sketches, and verbal instructions. Assist in the development of both interior and exterior designs by providing feasibility information, master sections, and packaging information. Work to find common ground with cross-functional teams while championing the goals of the design team. Advise the studio team on requirements for common automotive manufacturing processes and build conditions while meeting Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards (FMVSS) guidelines. Lead groups of designers to achieve best-in-class results. Coordinate multiple projects to support overall project and component design timing. Oversee the modeling of simple or complex parts as well as dependent components. Define and apply Six Sigma principles and GD&T for assemblies and dependent components. Run design proposal meetings to establish closure on outstanding program issues using Vis Mock-Up and TeamCenter Engineering to gather and disseminate data. Utilize TeamCenter Engineering as a Product Data Management (PDM) system to document program milestones. Education and Experience (Required) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) studio experience. Minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience in product design and development. Minimum of 5 years of experience using CATIA V5 Generative Surface Design (GSD), Free Form Surfacing (FFS), and 3D modeling. Education and Experience (Preferred) Experience with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) processes and release procedures. Experience in craftsmanship and systems compatibility. Experience evaluating design alternatives and providing recommendations. Experience in Batavia, Philpot, and Descriptive Geometry, as well as manual drafting. B-surface experience. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Required) Ability to plan and organize department management tools such as surface trackers and surface change requests while maintaining deliverables. Ability to drive resolution of surface data issues and lead digital reviews. Ability to work within a styling studio environment, both independently and as a team member. Proficiency in CATIA V5 for producing studio and styling data guidelines while maintaining best practices. Ability to comprehend dimensional variations on nominal surface gaps and flushness. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Preferred) Ability to be creative and provide artistic insight to ensure consistency with the design process. Knowledge of surface changes within a Surface Data Management System (SDMS). Knowledge of the design development and feasibility process and how these drive design deliverables. Basic skills and ability in hands-on automotive tool usage and application.
