Job Description
The summer temp student assistant for Biology and Chemistry will assist departmental faculty and/or staff with tasks needed throughout the department. Support and responsibilities may include (but are not limited to), office support, phone coverage, assisting walk-ins, maintaining equipment and supplies, monitoring lab activities, assisting faculty with grading for summer course, or research assistance. As such, workers may be asked to perform grading, laboratory preparation, office/clerical work, specific research projects, or other tasks as requested by the supervising individual.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending upon the specific needs of the position, which will be discussed in advance with the student worker, the following tasks can be included in their expected weekly duties.
Laboratory / Research Assistants and Graders are expected to perform the following duties, as related to the course(s) or research projects in which they are providing assistance:
- Assist faculty with the routine laboratory activities for a specific summer biology or chemistry course
- Helping to maintain a safe, instructive atmosphere in the laboratory
- Follow all safety guidelines in the laboratory and assist in enforcing these guidelines for all students in the laboratory
- Maintain proper attire for the work/laboratory environment in accordance with the Liberty Way and as directed by the supervisor(s)
- Be punctual to all meetings scheduled by the course instructor(s) or supervisor
- Maintain professional communication with supervising faculty
- Be familiar with procedures and calculations involved in an experiment prior to entering the laboratory
- Be responsible for grading laboratory reports and/or lab assignments and return them in a timely manner, as directed by supervising faculty
- All grading efforts must be completed in the Center for Natural Sciences Building
- Maintain accurate grade and/or attendance records and share these with supervising faculty, while maintaining strict confidence to comply with all FERPA regulations
- Ensure that all laboratory reagents and materials/supplies are restocked and that all benches, fume hoods, and other areas are clean and neat before leaving the laboratory
- Maintain documentation of their work time and efforts
- Undertake other tasks as designated by the supervising faculty/staff
Student Office Assistants are expected to perform the following duties:
- Assist administrative assistants with routine office tasks, phone coverage, walk-ins, etc.
- Assist with the collection and distribution of mail as needed.
- Assist with maintaining a positive and helpful atmosphere within the department and office.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission.
- Be able to positively welcome and engage with visiting / prospective students and parents about LU, while they are in the waiting area
- Maintain confidentiality of any information that is heard and/or seen while working.
- Maintain professional communication with supervising staff, including responsibility for completing tasks assigned during working hours.
- Follow all safety guideline requirements for working in the Biology & Chemistry department, such as completing a safety training course.
- Maintain high attention to detail, proactive initiative, organization, and excellent communication skills.
- Be able to lift approximately 10-15lbs
- Adhere to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner
- Understanding the courses and professors within the department is a plus
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED required
- Experience working on a computer or tablet.
- Demonstrate ability and willingness to work cooperatively with students, faculty, and administrators
- Demonstrate ability to be instructed by faculty and staff on incoming tasks
- Demonstrate reliability with attendance and clocking in / out of working shift
ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB
Communication and Comprehension
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information
- Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner
- Possess communication skills that allow the professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of visitors that come to the Center for Natural Science (CNS) building
- Strong organizational skills
Problem Solving
- Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and apply judgment in order to solve problems of a routine nature.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
- Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
- Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
- Regularly lift 15 or fewer pounds.

Work Environment
The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.
