Job Description

HVAC Superintendent (Onsite Abernathy Texas Data Center)

Mullins Mechanical is a leader in industrial and large commercial mechanical, plumbing, HVAC construction projects. Our projects are often in the industrial and manufacturing environments, such as manufacturing facilities, automotive plants, chemical plants, distribution centers, warehouses, and other large commercial facilities.  We are a self-performing specialty contractor specializing in design-build applications, HVAC systems, plumbing, process piping systems, boiler and chiller systems, equipment installation and rigging, plant relocation and maintenance, and metal fabrication. 

Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Field Operations Director and provide regular updates regarding field commissioning progress, manpower, startup activities, project readiness, and field challenges.
  • Execute the commissioning plan developed by the Commissioning Project Manager.
  • Direct and supervise all daily field commissioning activities on assigned projects.
  • Lead commissioning technicians, startup personnel, subcontractors, manufacturers, and specialty vendors throughout commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate daily manpower, work assignments, and commissioning priorities.
  • Develop and maintain daily and weekly startup schedules that align with project milestones.
  • Coordinate equipment startup with manufacturers, controls contractors, TAB agencies, electrical contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Verify that systems are complete, operational, and ready for startup prior to commissioning activities.
  • Supervise startup and functional performance testing of HVAC, plumbing, process piping, mechanical equipment, controls, and integrated building systems.
  • Coordinate system flushing, pressure testing, balancing, controls integration, and equipment verification.
  • Identify commissioning deficiencies, troubleshoot system issues, coordinate corrective actions, and verify successful resolution.
  • Maintain field commissioning punch lists, deficiency logs, startup records, and testing documentation.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with Project Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, Quality, Safety, and field operations personnel.
  • Ensure commissioning activities comply with contract requirements, project specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and company quality standards.
  • Conduct startup safety meetings and ensure compliance with Lockout/Tagout procedures and other commissioning safety requirements.
  • Support owner demonstrations, training sessions, and final system turnover.
  • Submit complete and accurate field commissioning documentation to the Commissioning Project Manager for project closeout.
  • Mentor field personnel on commissioning procedures, startup best practices, and safe execution of commissioning activities.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical degree, apprenticeship, or trade certification preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, process piping, controls, startup, or commissioning.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience leading field operations on large-scale construction projects.
  • Extensive experience with equipment startup, testing, balancing, controls integration, and system commissioning.
  • Thorough understanding of construction sequencing, field operations, startup procedures, and integrated building systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment submittals, control diagrams, and sequences of operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, and specialty vendors during commissioning activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Procore, Bluebeam, and construction management software.
  • OSHA 30 certification required or ability to obtain.
  • Commissioning certification (CxA, CCP, CBCP, QCxP, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Ability to travel extensively to assigned project sites.

Essential Job Functions:

Work at heights — including ladders, scaffolds, lifts, platforms, mezzanines, and elevated structures up to and exceeding 100 feet.

  • Work around moving equipment — such as forklifts, cranes, aerial lifts, skid steers, and other heavy machinery.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Perform physically demanding tasks — including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Maintain situational awareness in dynamic, noisy, and high‑hazard environments.
  • Use required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection, and respiratory protection when applicable.
  • Work in confined or restricted spaces as required by project scope.
  • Operate or use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Follow safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazard‑control measures.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and equipment operators using verbal instructions, radios, and hand signals.

Physical Demands:

Lifting and carrying materials and equipment up to 50 lbs frequently

  • Working on uneven terrain including dirt, gravel, mud, rebar mats, and unfinished surfaces.
  • Climbing ladders and stairs repeatedly throughout the workday.
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching to perform installation, repair, or inspection tasks.
  • Repetitive motions including gripping, twisting, hammering, and tool operation.
  • Full use of hands, arms, legs, and balance to safely navigate job sites and perform tasks.
  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to identify hazards, read instructions, and communicate in high‑noise environments.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Year‑round outdoor environments including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Industrial indoor environments such as data centers, manufacturing floors, mechanical rooms, and utility spaces.
  • High‑noise areas requiring hearing protection.
  • Dusty, dirty, or fume‑producing environments depending on project scope.
  • Tight or congested workspaces with multiple trades working simultaneously.
  • Varying lighting conditions including low‑light or task‑light‑only areas.

Cognitive & Safety‑Critical Requirements

Maintain alertness and awareness for long periods.

  • Recognize and avoid hazards including fall hazards, electrical hazards, pinch points, and equipment movement.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Make quick, safe decisions in changing conditions.
  • Work independently or as part of a team depending on task needs.
