Job Description

The Superintendent will oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of water, sewer, gas, or electric utility systems, ensuring they run safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations. Description

  • Oversees daily operations of water, sewer, gas, electric, or stormwater systems to ensure safe, reliable service
  • Manages and supervises utility crews, including scheduling, training, and performance oversight
  • Plans and coordinates maintenance, repairs, and capital improvement projects
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and safety standards
  • Responds to emergencies such as main breaks, outages, or contamination events
  • Prepares budgets, tracks expenditures, and manages materials and equipment
  • Coordinates with engineers, contractors, and other departments on utility projects
  • Acts as a point of contact for municipal leadership, regulators, and the public

Profile

  • Demonstrated experience leading utility operations (water, wastewater, gas, electric, or stormwater) with a strong track record of reliable service delivery
  • Deep understanding of utility systems, infrastructure maintenance, and capital improvement planning
  • Proven ability to supervise, motivate, and develop field crews and supervisory staff
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance, safety standards, and environmental requirements
  • Effective decision‑maker who remains calm and decisive during emergencies and system failures
  • Skilled in budgeting, cost control, and resource planning for public utility operations
  • Excellent communication skills, able to work effectively with municipal leadership, regulators, contractors, and the public
  • Organized and detail‑oriented, with strong planning and documentation abilities
  • Adaptable leader who embraces technology, process improvements, and best practices in utilities management
