SUPERVISOR, TOOL & DIE - 2ND SHIFT

SpaceX is seeking a motivated Tool & Die Supervisor to lead the tool and die specialist team through new build construction, commissioning, planned maintenance, and repairs of its injection molding, aluminum die casting, and stamping tools. These tools need to be of exceptional quality, leading to high uptime and product yield. This individual will partner with vertically integrated cross-functional teams to bridge manufacturing, production, and maintenance operations. They will be expected to challenge anything that impacts effective operations, including tool design, product manufacturing processes, and logistics.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mentor, lead, and supervise up to 20 employees
  • Supervise the production flow within the tool shop, ensuring safety and the efficiency of the entire assembly shop area
  • Work with the shop floor, manufacturing engineers, and quality teams to resolve recurring nonconformance issues
  • Review work order instructions with planners and manufacturing engineers to ensure shop floor technicians have accurate and complete instructions, and if necessary, recommend changes
  • Meet tight and moving production schedules
  • Coordinate maintenance support during problematic situations
  • Ensure all work is completed on time and to specification
  • Evaluating team members through mid-term/annual reviews
  • Provide regular reports on the shop/project productivity status
  • Drive good communication and culture, enforcing systems and corporate policies
  • Monitor labor hours and overtime, approving staff hours
  • Responsible for all aspects of tool making activities
  • New injection mold builds
  • Nominal mold maintenance and repair
  • Support the internal machining team throughout each new build and or repair
  • Align with production and engineering to adjust tool maintenance intervals
  • Support engineering to refine mold preparation checklists specific to each job
  • Coordinate the daily scope of work with the tool and die team
  • Interview and hire tool making staff for two shifts
  • Support production and maintenance with tooling troubleshooting
  • Identify and proactively execute opportunities for improvement within the tooling department
  • Create and maintain mold spare parts lists
  • Explore and identify future improvements and cost saving initiatives
  • Support tooling trials internally and/or with outside vendors

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 5+ years of professional experience working with plastic injection mold maintenance and repair
  • 5+ years of professional experience building new plastic injection molds from raw material
  • 3+ years of experience in leadership or as a supervisor

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional experience with maintenance in a production environment such as injection molding, casting, die casting, stamping and assembly
  • Professional experience helping to manage the costs, schedule and complexity associated with each process
  • Experience creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere in a collaborative work team
  • Professional experience working with and launching a new product line launch
  • Ability to interpret dimensional data and propose/execute corrective actions
  • Ability to read and comprehend mold/part drawings and dimensions
  • Establish and maintain ownership of the department and ensure its continued success
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both verbal and written communication
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Expertise with common Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to work the following hours:

  • 2nd shift: Monday to Friday from 3:30pm to 2:00am

  • Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed

  • Must be willing to travel (up to 15%) to other SpaceX locations/vendors
