Position Overview

The Supervisor of Instruction- Social Studies/History supports the development, implementation, and

continuous improvement of the secondary Social Studies/History instructional program across grades 6-12.

This individual works closely with school-based instructional leaders and teachers to execute the network's

vision, goals, and priorities for Social Studies/History instruction.

The Supervisor of Instruction- Social Studies/History provides content-specific leadership through

curriculum support, professional development, assessment development and analysis, classroom

observations, coaching, and progress monitoring. The position may be structured as a part-time employee

role or an external consulting engagement based on the qualifications and availability of the selected

candidate and the needs of the organization.

Essential Functions

  1. Executes the vision for the network's secondary Social Studies/History instructional program for grades 6 -

12 in service of the established goals and priorities for the Social Studies/History Department.

  1. Plans and leads network professional development for Social Studies/History teachers and instructional

leaders.

  1. Ensures vertical alignment of Social Studies/History courses, with a special focus on college-preparatory

coursework and college readiness.

  1. Plans and models coaching meetings based on the needs of teachers and leaders, including co-planning

sessions, data meetings, and instructional observations.

  1. Regularly observes and/or co-observes Social Studies/History instruction and provides teachers and

instructional leaders with timely written and in-person feedback and coaching, differentiating the

frequency and intensity of support based on identified teacher, leader, school, and network needs.

  1. Models and/or co-teaches Social Studies/History lessons, as needed.

  2. Implements effective internal assessment systems to monitor academic progress, including the

development and administration of three network mid-quarter assessments (September, November, and

February) for each grade level and three March Madness Game Day Assessments for each grade level as

part of TNReady test preparation.

  1. Implements effective data analysis processes for network mid-quarter assessments and supports

instructional leaders and teachers in using assessment results to identify trends, misconceptions,

instructional priorities, and appropriate reteach actions.

  1. Creates March Madness plans for grades 6, 7, and 8 as part of TNReady test preparation.

  2. Assists principals, deans of instruction, and instructional coaches in developing and strengthening

Social Studies/History instructional programs that are consistent with network goals, priorities, and

instructional expectations.

  1. Provides an ongoing quarterly status report on the health, progress, needs, and outcomes of the Social

Studies/History instructional program to the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning.

  1. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Managing Director of Teaching and

Learning and, when applicable, consistent with the agreed-upon consulting scope of work.

Physical Demands

This position may require lifting objects that exceed 25 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects

? Ability to coach teachers and instructional leaders toward measurable improvement in instructional

practice and scholar outcomes.

? Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

? Strong instructional expertise and the ability to make practical use of assessment and

observational data.

? Excellent written and oral communication skills.

? Strong planning, organization, and project management skills.

? Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

? Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple deliverables within a part-time or consulting

structure.

Work Structure

This role may be filled as either:

? A part-time employee position with an established weekly or monthly work schedule; or

? An external consulting engagement governed by an agreed-upon scope of work, deliverables,

timelines, and payment structure.

The selected candidate must be available to visit schools, observe instruction, collaborate with school-based

leaders, facilitate professional development, and participate in designated network meetings. Some

responsibilities may be completed remotely; however, regular in-person engagement at school and network locations will be required.

Requirements

Qualifications

? Master's degree preferred in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies/History Education, History,

or a related field.

? Minimum of five years of successful experience as a Social Studies/History classroom teacher and

a minimum of two years of successful experience as a school- or district-level instructional coach.

? Certified by the State of Tennessee.

? Meets the health and physical requirements of the position.
