Role Overview

The Manufacturing Engineer- Special Processes is responsible for developing, validating, and sustaining manufacturing processes related to heat treatment, plating, chemical processing, welding, surface treatments, and other critical special processes. This role ensures that all special processes meet industry standards, customer specifications, and internal quality, cost, and delivery objectives.

The engineer will serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) for special processes and will drive process improvements, equipment qualification, defect reduction, and compliance with regulatory/industry requirements (e.g., NADCAP, ISO, customer-specific specs).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Process Development & Optimization
  • Develop, define, and optimize special process parameters for heat treatment, plating, anodizing, passivation, and coating operations.
  • Conduct capability studies (Cp/Cpk), DOE, and root-cause investigations to improve process robustness.
  • Support new process introductions, including equipment selection, installation, commissioning, and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ).
  1. Technical Expertise & Compliance
  • Interpret customer, OEM, and industry specifications (e.g., AMS, ASTM) for special processes.
  • Ensure compliance with NADCAP, AS9100, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish process windows, control limits, and inspection/quality checkpoints.
  • Provide metallurgical and material-science guidance for heat-treated and coated parts.
  1. Equipment & Tooling Management
  • Support selection, qualification, and maintenance of ovens, furnaces, plating lines, chemical tanks, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Validate new tooling, fixtures, and racking concepts for plating/heat treat consistency.
  1. Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead corrective actions (8D, RCA, Fishbone, 5-Why).
  • Collaborate with Quality, Production, and Supply Chain to ensure process capability & supplier robustness.
  1. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work with design engineering on manufacturability (DFM) reviews related to special processes.
  • Support suppliers through audits, technical reviews, and process capability evaluations.

Experience

  • Strong knowledge of NADCAP and aerospace/automotive/industrial manufacturing environments (as applicable).
  • Experience with metallurgical analysis and microstructure evaluation is a plus.

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in heat treatment (vacuum, gas carburizing, nitriding, tempering, solutionizing, aging).
  • Knowledge of electroplating, electroless plating, anodizing, passivation, phosphate coating, or similar processes.
  • Understanding of metallurgical concepts such as material properties, transformations, hardness, corrosion, etc.
  • Familiarity with PFMEA, CP, MSA, SPC, DOE, CAPA.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools and manufacturing documentation systems.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work cross-site with suppliers and internal teams.
