Job Description

A Machinist Level 2 is a skilled professional who uses machines, tools, and technical knowledge to create precise parts from metals, plastics, and composites for various industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, and defense. They are responsible for interpreting blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided designs (CAD) to determine the best approach for producing each part, including advanced comprehension of construction documents, sourcing the required materials, measuring & cutting materials, producing required CNC code, part conformance and documentation.
Machinist Level 2 personnel would be expected to operate with little supervision utilizing drawing and construction document available. They may work independently or in teams to complete tasks assigned. They would be expected to help mentor and train junior Machinists who may be teamed with them.
More experienced Machinists would be expected to understand and anticipate machining and tooling limits and other issues to properly fixture, jig, or sequence the machining process to control or eliminate problems. They should also be knowledgeable of advanced techniques and tooling to achieve desired machining results.
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Independent responsibility to produce machined parts.
- Move and position raw materials and finished goods by use of pallet jacks, forklifts, and shop cranes. Safely preparing rigging for overhead lifting as directed.
- Prepare parts for machining.
- Operate various drilling, cutting, torches and other tools and equipment to create a wide variety of parts from shop drawings as directed that conform to specifications.
- Determine machine process including CNC programing, layout, clamping, fixturing, tool selection, marking, etc.
- Perform a variety of general shop tasks including grinding, assisting Fabricators, etc.
- Use drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions to assemble structures.
- Recording any fabrication documentation or testing results as required.
- Perform light maintenance on equipment.
- Perform regular facilities related operations on buildings, grounds, and/or related facilities as required.
- Support and participate in the organization’s continual improvement program to conform to ISO 9001 and understand the implications of not complying with the quality management system.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic math proficiency includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and fractions. Understanding of units of measurement and geometry is required.
Experience:
- Three (3)-Five (5) years of machining experience minimum.
- Experience working in an industrial shop/manufacturing.
- Experience with military projects preferred.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001 environment a plus.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge of all safety practices associated with machining and mechanical work.
- Ability to read and understand work orders, sketches, schematics, and drawings.
- Ability to use grinders, drill presses, pipe threaders, and other basic mechanical tools.
- Ability to operate a forklift and pallet jack, and shop cranes.
- Ability to safely rig lifting devices.
- Computer competency with normal office software and email, a plus.
Physical And Safety Requirements:
- Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 30 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Able to use close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and adjustment of focus.
- If needed, able to work rotating day and night shifts.
- Regular exposure to a production environment.
- Must comply with any safety or PPE requirements required by SIT or clients.
- Must be able to pass the required drug test.
