SLMC is seeking an experienced Surgical Assistant to support surgeons as a First or Second Assistant in both complex and routine operative and invasive procedures. The Surgical Assistant will work closely with the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative process.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience across multiple surgical specialties, including robotic-assisted procedures. While the Surgical Assistant may perform Surgical Technologist duties if required, they will preferably function solely in the first assist role during procedures.

This position is best suited for experienced professionals; first-time travelers are not recommended and require additional approval by the hiring supervisor.

Note: Candidates will be asked to detail specific procedures they have assisted with, particularly in Vascular, Robotic, and ENT cases.

• Minimum 2 years of Surgical Assistant experience

• BLS (required)

  • RN: BLS

  • ORT: BLS

  • First Assist: BLS + First Assist skills checklist (not general ORT checklist)

• Strong knowledge of surgical anatomy and procedures

• Ability to function as First or Second Assist

• Experience assisting with robotic cases (Xi required)

• Ability to work efficiently in a high-acuity OR environment

• Cross-trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology Center

• No floating to other hospitals

• Approximately 1 1.5 weeks, depending on team and shift (Subject to change based on unit needs)

Scheduling & Call

• Day Shift Start Times: 5:30 AM 7:00 AM (variable)

• Weekend Rotation: N/A

• On-Call Required

  • 30-minute response time

General / Neuro Call:

• 8-week call schedule

• EOS call: 10 weekday slots (Mon Fri)

• 1 2 weekend call shifts (Sat Sun)

Orthopedic Surgical Assistants:

• 1 weekday call (Mon Thu) per week

• 1 call weekend every 5 weeks (Fri Sun)

All call schedules subject to department needs.

• Holiday expectations vary

• Holiday weeks:

  • Agency may offer premium rate /hr

  • Or work normal hours and request unpaid holiday off (Contact hiring supervisor for details)
