Job Description

Sherwood Companies was established in 1934 and currently under the third generation owner and CEO, David Sherwood. Sherwood has become an industry leader in the Midwest by having the ability to self-perform many types of civil construction projects, while having a tremendous amount of experience with all underground utilities. Sherwood self-performs many types of civil construction including: earthwork and site prep, concrete and asphalt paving, civil and structural concrete, rock excavation, piling and sheet piling, sub-grade stabilization, and water/waste-water treatment facilities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Survey Party Chief is responsible for providing surveying services to company supervision, superintendents, foremen and crews, subcontractors and project owners, on medium to large roadway and heavy construction projects. The surveyor is expected to adhere to all PPE and safety guidelines on the job sites. This role is classified as safety sensitive.

ACTIVITIES/TASKS/SCOPE

  • Establish GPS Site Calibration: establish site calibration from known and unknown control to establish project site calibration and control
  • Verify Site Elevation Basis: site verify elevation basis and establish benchmarks for the crews as necessary
  • Bridge Layout and Staking: establish survey control local to bridge structures including bench mark
  • Drain Structure and Feature Layout: establish control as necessary to layout box culverts and headwalls, drain pipe (all types) and associated drain structures, ditches and paved ditches
  • Roadway and Features Layout: layout clearing limit, center line, stationing and R.O.W. lines as necessary
  • Paving and Bases Layout: layout edges and breaks for various paving base materials and verify grade as bases are placed
  • Retaining Walls MSE and Cast in Place Layout: establish survey control local to wall structures including bench mark
  • Machine Control Base: assist grading crews in maintaining machine control base and radios and verifying location and settings
  • Subcontractors: layout and stationing as needed for all subcontractors
  • Equipment and Daily Items: charge and maintain equipment daily
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Current Driver License & clean MVR
  • Minimum 1+ years construction surveying experience
  • Heavy Civil construction experience preferred
  • Experience with Autodesk - AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D a plus

CERTIFICATION/OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of survey methods and ability to apply them to uploading/downloading survey files
  • Knowledge of plan and shop drawing reading with ability to extract data necessary to perform work
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide and perform these operations using units of measurement for distance, area, slopes and profile grades with a general understanding of algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Survey equipment experience with Trimble (T-10 tablet, R-10 GPS, Scanner/Robotic Total Stations SX 10, etc.) preferred
