Job Description
Head of Tax Operations and Strategy Position Overview The Head of Tax Operations & Strategy is the firm’s senior tax leader, owning tax strategy, technical governance, and end-to-end compliance across all fund and corporate entities. This role serves as the primary tax advisor to the investment team and partners, leads all external advisor relationships (PwC, KPMG, HedgeServ), and is the final decision-maker on tax classification, reporting positions, and structuring across a multi-strategy, cross-asset platform. This is a hands-on, high-judgment role requiring deep technical expertise in fund tax and the communication skills to advise partners and investors with the utmost discretion. Core Responsibilities:- 1) Tax Strategy & Technical Oversight · Define and enforce tax treatment of complex investment activities · Interpret how economic transactions map to tax outcomes · Provide guidance on booking methodology to achieve intended tax results · Act as final decision-maker on tax classification and reporting positions · Advise on structuring implications of Event Driven and Credit investments, including use of SPVs and blockers where necessary · Proactively identify tax risks, elections, planning opportunities, and compliance considerations at the transaction stage · Monitor and interpret tax law developments; translate into actionable guidance for internal stakeholders 2) Fund Tax Operations & Reporting · Oversee accuracy and integrity of tax data from Third Party Administrator and Tax Preparers · Own end-to-end delivery of: o Tax lot / holding period reports o Realized gain/loss reporting o IRS and other US and foreign (e.g. Switzerland, UK) tax compliance reporting, filings (K-1s, corporate and individual tax returns) · Review and validate outputs before dissemination to: o Investors o Partners o Internal stakeholders · Assist with tax planning and forecasting of taxable income positions across fund entities · Ad hoc projects as required 3) Corporate Entity & Partner Tax Operations & Reporting · Manage annual tax calendar for US Federal, State and foreign offices as needed. Lead coordination of: Partners estimated tax payments o Partner extensions and filings (federal, state, international) · Individual partner tax planning and compliance · Defend all tax positions on returns; manage strategic and tactical responses to IRS, state, and foreign audits and information requests · Ad hoc projects as required 4) External Advisor & Third Party Administrator Management · Direct and oversee work of: o PwC (tax advisors) o KPMG (filings/compliance) o HedgeServ (Fund Administrator) · Lead relationship for external provider engagement, assessment and fee negotiations · Establish internal positions and ensure external parties execute · Resolve tax deliverables across: o Middle Office o Fund Accounting o Tax Reporting groups 5) Cross-Functional Coordination · Serve as the bridge between investment, accounting, and operations · Assess and direct: o Investing activities tax implications across a multi-strategy, cross asset class platform o Accounting and tax treatment of investment operations · Communicate relevant tax developments to CIO, Partners, investment team, and investors on a regular basis · Coordinate with: o CIO / Partners / Investment team o Fund Accounting o Treasury & Operations o Investor relations 6) Transaction-Level Advisory · Advise on structuring implications of Event Driven and Credit investments and use of SPVs and blockers where necessary · Analysis for structured trades, reorgs, corporate actions · Partner with Legal and Investment Analysts on review of fund and investment documents (LPAs, LLC agreements, subscription agreements, side letters) · Own preparation and maintenance of written tax analyses, transaction memoranda, and internal guidance documenting tax positions and assumptions 7) Leadership & Process Improvement · Own tax function process design, technical governance, documentation standards, and continu
Requirements
10+ years buy-side tax strategy experience with investment management or Fund Tax Strategy background · Specific focus on convertible bonds, equity derivatives and tax impact on hedging strategies · Working knowledge of trading hedge fund structures, tax lot analyses · Experience managing external tax advisors (Big 4 preferred) and fund administrators · Ability to communicate with CIO, partners on investment and personal tax matters with utmost discretion · Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to simplify complex tax concepts for non-tax stakeholders · Ability to work individually and across functional groups for desired results · Take initiative to identify and think laterally for revenue generating or tax optimising strategies · CPA required; advanced degree in Taxation (LLM, MST) preferred
