Job Summary: The Tax Manager for North America plays a critical role in shaping the tax strategy and ensuring compliance excellence across a complex multi‑entity environment. This position offers the opportunity to lead all federal and state tax matters for the region, influence key financial decisions, and partner directly with senior leadership to drive operational and strategic tax outcomes. The ideal candidate brings strong technical depth, a proactive advisory mindset, and the ability to navigate sophisticated tax challenges across a dynamic and growing business. As a trusted expert, you will set standards for tax governance, elevate our compliance framework, and contribute meaningfully to the company's financial integrity and long‑term success.
You will report to the Head of Tax and be part of the global tax team, while overseeing the Americas region across different tax types.
Hempel is entering an exciting phase of expansion in the Americas. In addition to our two established business units in the region, we have set a clear strategic ambition to significantly grow our market presence, operational scale, and commercial footprint in the Americas region.
Essential Responsibilities:
Tax Returns and Other Reporting
Maintain a comprehensive tax calendar and ensure all statutory deadlines are met.
Prepare and/or manage the preparation of federal and state income tax returns, including extensions and estimated tax payments.
Manage tax audits and inquiries from state and federal tax authorities.
Manage third‑party vendors for sales, use, and property taxes.
Calculate income tax provisions for monthly and annual financial reporting.
Develop, document, and monitor internal controls over tax processes.
Reconcile tax‑related general ledger accounts monthly.
Cross‑Functional & External Coordination
Serve as primary point of contact for state and federal tax authorities.
Coordinate with internal Finance, Legal, and external advisors on tax matters impacting North America.
Research and Planning
Work with tax planning opportunities and communicate findings to the Tax Director.
Research federal and state tax technical issues and prepare supporting documentation or technical memos.
Provide tax guidance on specific transactions and collaborate with Finance to respond to tax‑related information requests.
Identify opportunities to improve processes for gathering and managing tax‑sensitive information.
Minimum Qualifications:
CPA required.
Minimum five years of experience in tax, including public accounting experience.
Prior experience working directly with state and federal tax authorities.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business; Master's in Tax or Finance preferred.
Experience with accounting software systems; Microsoft D365 experience preferred.
Advanced proficiency in Excel; strong skills with PowerPoint and database tools such as Access.
Willingness to travel occasionally within the region and abroad.
