Job Description

POSITION: Teaching Editor - Pittsburgh Media Partnership Newsroom (Part-time)

DEPARTMENT: Center for Media Innovation

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Center for Media Innovation

WORK SCHEDULE: Fully on-site; some opportunity for occasional remote work.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Summarize the job duties and purpose. A seasoned journalist with teaching abilities, who has the vision to oversee the entire editorial operation, who can direct resources as needed to deliver incremental, daily accountability stories, and who can develop resources to build out the newsroom.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five years of newsroom leadership or direct supervisory experience in a professional daily, weekly, or digital news environment
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate, thoughtful editorial decisions under deadline pressure
  • Strong editing, assigning, and story-shaping skills, with the ability to move stories from idea to publishable content
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize news quickly, assign stories effectively, edit raw copy, and ensure timely production of content
  • Experience coaching reporters and early-career journalists, including helping them identify story ideas, strengthen reporting, develop sources, and produce reliable content
  • Experience overseeing or supporting student journalists, interns, or other emerging reporters in a teaching newsroom or similar setting
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and encourage constructive public engagement in the reporting process
  • Flexible, creative, entrepreneurial, and collaborative approach to newsroom leadership
  • Strong knowledge of Southwestern Pennsylvania's political, social, and economic landscape
  • Clear understanding of journalism ethics, editorial standards, and libel law, with the ability to apply them consistently
  • Active commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in newsroom practice and operations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust across a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to balance daily production needs with longer-term newsroom goals
  • Passion for local journalism and its role in accountability, civic engagement, and community building

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Lead the day-to-day editorial operation of the Pittsburgh Media Partnership Newsroom. Assign, edit, and guide stories produced by the newsroom's two full-time reporters. Support story development from concept to publication, with an emphasis on accountability, community-centered, and public-service journalism. Maintain strong editorial processes and standards to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and timely production of content. (45%)

2. Coach and develop reporters in a teaching newsroom environment. Provide feedback, coaching, and editorial guidance to reporters to strengthen sourcing, story framing, reporting depth, and writing. Help reporters refine ideas, identify strong news opportunities, and produce reliable, publishable journalism. (25%)

3. Oversee the summer internship program. Administer the Pittsburgh Media Partnership's 10-week summer internship program by assigning 10 interns to outlets across the partnership and organizing weekly training sessions throughout the program. Maintain communication with interns and outlet supervisors to support learning, accountability, and a strong overall internship experience. (20%)

4. Support newsroom growth and visibility. Help identify opportunities to strengthen the Pittsburgh Media Partnership Newsroom's impact, partnerships, and long-term sustainability. Serve as an editorial representative of the newsroom as needed in meetings, collaborations, and public-facing settings. (10%))

5. Supervises 2 full-time positions and provides oversight and guidance for participants in the Pittsburgh Media Partnership summer internship program.
