Job Description
Position SummaryThe Technical Product Manager is responsible for defining, documenting, and governing detailed business and functional requirements that drive system enhancements across Personal and Commercial Lines insurance platforms. This role serves as the primary interface between business stakeholders and software engineering teams, ensuring that strategic objectives are translated into technically actionable, testable requirements.This position requires deep familiarity with insurance workflows, policy administration systems, rating engines, integrations, and data structures. The Technical Product Manager ensures traceability from business intent through solution design, development, testing, and deployment.Core ResponsibilitiesRequirements Engineering & Documentation
- Lead structured discovery sessions with underwriting, actuarial, claims, compliance, and operations teams.
- Produce detailed documentation including:
- Business Requirements Documents (BRDs)
- Functional Requirements Specifications (FRS)
- Technical requirement refinements
- Process flow diagrams (BPMN/UML)
- Data mapping documents
- API interface specifications
- Acceptance criteria and test scenarios
- Translate regulatory and ISO form updates into system logic changes.
- Define validation rules, rating logic, underwriting rules, and workflow triggers.
- Collaborate with Software Engineers, Architects, and QA to:
- Refine requirements into technical design inputs
- Clarify system impacts and cross-platform dependencies
- Define database field changes and data transformation rules
- Document integration touchpoints
- Participate in design reviews to validate solution architecture alignment.
- Ensure backward compatibility and impact analysis across:
- Policy Administration Systems (PAS)
- Rating Engines
- Document generation systems
- Agency portals
- Claims systems
- Third-party data providers
- Define data exchange requirements (JSON/XML schemas, APIs, batch feeds).
- Support API design reviews and payload validation.
- Document field-level mappings between internal and external systems.
- Validate data integrity, transformation logic, and business rule enforcement.
- Assist with reporting and analytics requirement definitions.
- Serve as Product Owner within Agile or hybrid SDLC frameworks.
- Maintain and prioritize backlog aligned with business value.
- Write detailed user stories with explicit acceptance criteria.
- Participate in sprint planning, refinement, demos, and retrospectives.
- Support defect triage and root cause analysis.
- Ensure traceability matrix from requirement → development → UAT → production.
- Interpret state-specific regulatory changes and implement system requirements.
- Ensure rate filings, underwriting rules, and coverage forms are properly reflected in system configuration.
- Partner with compliance to validate audit readiness.
- Ability to grasp foundational programming and database concepts
- Ability to think critically, research information on risks, and make informed decisions using proper judgment
- Ability to multitask and accurately track statuses of multiple projects
- Ability to convey technical ideas to a non-technical audience
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Business, Insurance, or related field.
- 3+ years in Product Management, Business Analysis, or Technical Requirements roles.
- Insurance experience
- Strong knowledge of:
- Policy lifecycle (quote → bind → issue → endorse → renew → cancel)
- Rating methodologies
- Underwriting rule frameworks
- Coverage structures and ISO forms
- Regulatory compliance requirements
- Experience working with:
- Policy Administration Systems (Guidewire, Duck Creek, Majesco, etc.)
- SQL querying and data validation
- REST/SOAP APIs
- XML/JSON data structures
- Experience in Agile development environments (Scrum/Kanban).
- Ability to read and interpret database schemas.
- Experience reviewing technical design documentation.
- Familiarity with:
- Data warehouses and reporting layers
- Catastrophe modeling integrations
- Risk scoring and third-party data services
- Experience with Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar backlog tools.
- Professional designations such as CPCU, AINS, or PMI-ACP or willingness to obtain them as part of your professional development.
- Strong analytical and system-thinking mindset
- Ability to decompose complex insurance processes into technical components
- Experience in creating field-level requirements and validation rules
- Structured documentation and traceability discipline
- Cross-functional communication between business and engineering teams
- Risk identification and dependency management
