Job Description

The Metal Stamping Design Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and validating tooling, dies, and stamped components used in high-volume manufacturing environments. This role supports product development, manufacturing engineering, tooling suppliers, and production teams to ensure robust designs, efficient manufacturability, and cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and detail progressive, transfer, and line dies using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, NX).

  • Create stamping process layouts, strip layouts, and material utilization plans.

  • Conduct formability analysis, draw simulations, and stress analysis to ensure part feasibility.

  • Collaborate with product engineering teams to refine part designs for manufacturability (DFM).

  • Develop die specifications, bill of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation.

  • Support tooling build, trials, debugging, and runoff at both internal and supplier tool shops.

  • Lead root-cause troubleshooting for die performance issues such as wrinkles, splits, springback, and excessive wear.

  • Optimize tooling for improved production rate, reduced scrap, and extended tool life.

  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to evaluate tool quotes, timelines, and feasibility.

  • Ensure all designs comply with safety standards, quality standards, and customer requirements.

  • Support APQP, PPAP, and launch activities for new programs.

  • Provide technical guidance to toolmakers, machinists, and production operators as needed.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 3–10+ years of experience in metal stamping, die design, or tooling engineering.

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD and GD&T.

  • Understanding of stamping processes including blanking, drawing, bending, forming, and restriking.

  • Knowledge of tool steels, coatings, heat treatment, and die maintenance.

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and customer standards.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root-cause analysis skills.

  • Experience supporting production in high-volume stamping environments.

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with simulation software (AutoForm, Pam-Stamp, etc.).

  • Background in automotive or appliance metal stamping.

  • Experience with automation, sensors, or in-die detection.

  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
