Job Description

Summary of role

We are seeking a candidate for the Trade Compliance & Logistics Senior Specialist who ensures import and export activities are executed efficiently and in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., U.S. Customs requirements, export controls, and sanctions), as well as internal policies. This role supports end-to-end international and domestic shipment execution by coordinating with internal stakeholders, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers; preparing and auditing trade and shipping documentation; managing exceptions and delivery performance; and identifying opportunities to improve service, cost, and compliance.

This position is based in Massachusetts and requires a presence on-site four (4) days per week, and open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and coordinate domestic and international shipments end-to-end, including routing, carrier/forwarder selection, pickup/delivery scheduling, and documentation flow to meet customer and business requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable import/export laws and regulations (e.g., EAR/ITAR as applicable, OFAC sanctions, U.S. Customs regulations, and applicable international requirements) and maintain required records.
  • Classify products for customs and export control purposes (HTS, ECCN), determine country of origin, and support valuation and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Conduct restricted party screening and review transactions for end-use/end-user concerns, embargoed destinations, and license/authorization requirements; escalate potential compliance risks as needed.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain trade and shipping documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, AES filings/EEI, broker/forwarder instructions, and other required documents).
  • Partner with customs brokers and freight forwarders to ensure accurate entries, timely clearance, compliant routing, and resolution of holds, exams, or discrepancies.
  • Monitor shipments in transit, manage delivery performance (e.g., OTIF), investigate service failures, and drive corrective actions with carriers/partners to reduce delays and repeat issues.
  • Support freight cost controls (rate validation, accrual support, invoice discrepancy resolution) and identify opportunities for service and cost optimization while maintaining compliance.
  • Maintain and improve logistics and trade compliance procedures, work instructions, and training materials; provide guidance to internal teams on Incoterms, documentation, lead times, and compliant shipment structure.
  • Support audits and compliance monitoring (entry audits, post-entry corrections, broker/carrier KPI reviews, internal controls testing) and implement corrective/preventive actions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain, International Business, Logistics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of experience in a combined trade compliance and logistics/shipping role (or closely related experience in import/export operations, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, or transportation).
  • Working knowledge of customs compliance concepts (HTS classification, country of origin, valuation, Incoterms, recordkeeping).
  • Working knowledge of U.S. export controls and sanctions compliance concepts (ECCN classification, restricted party screening, license determination) as applicable to the business.
  • Hands-on experience preparing shipping and trade documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, broker/forwarder instructions, and AES/EEI filings as applicable).
  • Experience coordinating with carriers, freight forwarders, and customs brokers; ability to troubleshoot time-sensitive shipment exceptions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with ERP/TMS and trade compliance systems (screening/AES tools) preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing transportation performance metrics (e.g., OTIF), carrier/forwarder scorecards, and root-cause analysis for delivery exceptions.
  • Experience with regulated products and/or hazardous materials shipping compliance (DOT/IATA/IMDG) and temperature-controlled/cold chain shipping, as applicable.
  • Prior participation in internal/external trade compliance audits, broker entry audits, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Professional certification(s) (e.g., CCS, CUSECO/CUSECO-Export, ECoP) and/or hazmat shipping certifications preferred.
